    FTM-350R vs TM-D710A: Which Should I Get?

Here's what I've been reading on the key differences (not verified to be accurate...waiting for someone with more knowledge): Kenwood TM-D710A +Digirepeater ?Sub-Band APRS +AVMAP +User firmware upgrade Yaesu FTM-350AR -Digirepeater +NAVI +Sub-Band APRS -User firmware upgrade...

    Yaesu FTM-350AR

Is there something special about the Garmin Nuvi 350 to allow seeing the waypoints? Or can this be done on any NMEA GPS that can receive waypoints with the right cable? How do you manage all the waypoints being sent to the Garmin Nuvi? I imagine 1000's of waypoints being stored and shown on...

    Yaesu FTM-350: Output waypoints?

Does the Yaesu FTM-350 output beacon/waypoints to any NMEA GPS (like Garmin GPS's)? I'd like to see APRS beacons/waypoints on a Garmin Nuvi (the newest models) or my eTrex, and see those waypoints on a map (I have custom maps). Or maybe someday a tablet running APRS software. Looking for...

    Yaesu FTM-350AR

Can you beacon in the background (sub-band?), and still use 2m in the foreground (main band)? The one disadvantage my current APRS radio has is consuming my 2m band, and I can't use 2m for anything else. So I'd like the radio to beacon on 2m while I'm monitoring and chatting on the 2m...

    Yaesu FTM-350AR

Viewing APRS waypoints on a map is definitely worth it. It is nice to be able to see where everyone is at. Depending on the device, you can also click on them and communicate with them. A separate device could also have a better keyboard for texting. Since they are waypoints, you can...

VHF Vertical: Why not the tallest?

What are some reasons for not wanting the tallest (e.g. 17 feet) antenna? Does a 17 foot antenna mounted to a metal pole need guy wires? No restrictions (price, location, laws). VHF/UHF vertical base antennas. Rural area, trees, repeaters on mountains, I'm at 500 feet above sea level...

    HF Starter Setup

What are some recommendations for a good, simple, value priced starter HF setup for voice mode? For the band, I'd like to work mostly in the evenings/night. A multi-band transceiver would be nice, but I presume it will cost a lot more than a single band like 10 meter. If that is the...

    Your HF experiences?

Please tell me about your experiences with HF (voice)? I need someone to test my assumption about HF. Please help me understand... I have a VHF radio and now considering HF. I'm having trouble overcoming a perception I have regarding HF: cost, complexity, no club support that I can see...

    Icom ID-31A Review: 440Mhz D-STAR HT

How would you compare the ID-31A to the Yaesu VX-8? Have you had the chance to work the D-PRS? I'm presuming it is digital proprietary version APRS. If so, I find this unfortunate. I like using APRS in remote locations, and don't need it worsen by trying to find someone with an ICOM radio...

    Small and rugged HT

I think Yaesu's magnesium die-cast is going to be the most rugged (I like my Standard Horizon marine VHF). Kenwood isn't very rugged. I'm curious about Icom, as I'm considering the ID-31A. But I'm guessing the ID-31A isn't as rugged because it also "light". I think any radio in a carrying...

    Yaesu VX-8GR vs. Kenwood TH-D72

In an emergency we can legally transmit on any frequency. If I'm stuck out in the middle of nowhere, and a plane/jet flies over me, I can radio them for help. I carry an aviation radio for this purpose.

    Yaesu VX-8GR vs. Kenwood TH-D72

Where did you receive the IPX8 information? The Yaesu tech emailed me back stating the radio is IPX5. Did some more searching and saw the brochure rating it IPX7.

    Yaesu VX-8GR vs. Kenwood TH-D72

Sorry to repeat the question: All the APRS functionality EXCEPT digirepeat and igate? VX-8 can receive APRS via PC software. VX-8 can transmit APRS messages via PC software. Jake

    Yaesu VX-8GR vs. Kenwood TH-D72

Thanks Moleculo. As long as I can fully use APRS and APRSPoint/UIView, I'd be happy. Winlink is something I've wanted to try. But with a HT/portable it is mostly impossible for me because of reception (trees, mountains, distance). Ideally I want a compact portable HF that can do APRS too...

    Yaesu VX-8GR vs. Kenwood TH-D72

Can you explain what it means to not have full TNC? For reference, I have the Kenwood TH-D7. What am I able to do with the D7 that I can't do with VX-8?

    Yaesu VX-8GR vs. Kenwood TH-D72

I read the Yaesu 8GR GPS is not as good as Kenwood's. Kenwood is using SiRFstarIII, not sure what Yaesu uses. Received a response from Kenwood regarding the device being powered by the USB port. Kenwood: "The TH-D72A may not be power by the USB connection." My Delorme PN-40 can be...

    Yaesu VX-8GR vs. Kenwood TH-D72

Does that mean the Yaesu's lack of PC TNC does not work with UI-View or APRSPoint? Or does the lack of TNC control mean you can't control the radio from the PC, using the PC as the radio's user interface? I really enjoy looking at a map of all the APRS units in the area. I also would...

    Yaesu VX-8GR vs. Kenwood TH-D72

Is the trade off between VX-8DR and VX-8GR: DR's ruggedness vs. built-in GPS. DR has the 6m band. Not sure how useful 6 meter is. Ideally there would be a reliable 6m APRS network in WA state. I'm also liking the idea of being able to use the GPS with my laptop. Can this be done...

    Yaesu VX-8GR vs. Kenwood TH-D72

I need help choosing my next radio. Here's what I want: 1. Use radio for backwood emergencies and communicating with group. 2. Freeband on FRS and Aviation (for emergency only). Rather re-program the radio than de-solder. Frequencies need to be accurate so I get good communication on the...
