Dumb ???? #3 (about radial length)

So.... I've been thinking about this for a week, and wandering thru a lot of websites. I found that "the DB" (on another site) agrees with you at .99. Using .1 wave, I got 36" (1/10 wave), for the placement of the RF choke. Using .15 wave, the answer was 54" (1/8 wave). I think that the next...

Dumb ???? #3 (about radial length)

OK, got everything but that...... What the heck is a Lambda???? I made an assumption that the VF would have an effect on the coax. I don't see that it doesn't. Are you saying that coax shield has no VF? How can that be? And if it does, then wouldn't having a fraction of a wave length make...

Thank You. That is it exactly. John.

In search of Factory Service manuals.

I don't know if you're interested but I have Lou Franklin's CB PLL databook and, Understanding & repairing CB radios. I'd be willing to let them go for cost+shipping. The books are in excellent condition, as I'm not smart enough to use them. John.

Dumb ???? #3 (about radial length)

As for today, I got the antenna down. Much easier where I have it now, as I can do it by myself. I also took down the mast. Replaced it with a EZ-up 22ft. Now it's even easier. I took down the Skipshooter, and put up a Semi-duster. That's a Starduster that I drilled and tapped out the radial...

    Looking for a guy (715)

Several days ago I was reading a post on these forums of a guy looking for books by Lou Franklin. I believe it was a member named "715". I can't find the post again, and I don't know how else to contact him. Any info welcome. Thanks, John.

Dumb ???? #3 (about radial length)

I re-read your post for about the 10th time (I'm, slow). Increasing the length will cause the efficiency of the antenna to go up, and that's all. The rf choke should make no difference. Is that correct? Thanks, Again.

Dumb ???? #3 (about radial length)

Henry, If I understood what you said correctly, the only way that the Chicom 1/2 wave can "get away" with using three 30 inch radials is by also using the mast and coax as part of the ground plane. That also allows it to "cheat" the antenna in to thinking it's 50 ohms. Is that correct? If I were...

Dumb ???? #3 (about radial length)

Jeff, Imagine, if you will, a 7ft Skipshooter mounted on an "L" bracket (to clamp to a pipe). Between the mount on the "L" bracket and the Skipshooter is a workman WIL-KIT-B six element (about 6 inches long) radial kit that uses 3/8x24 threads for mounting. It's obviously a cap-hat of some kind...

Dumb ???? #3 (about radial length)

Once again, I don't think I explained myself very well. Is there a relationship between the length of the radiator and the radials? Can I lower the SWR by lengthening the radials? How about by drooping them? My 1975 ARRL book doesn't tell me. Thanks, John.

Dumb ???? #3 (about radial length)

I finally got my 30 year old temporary (?) antenna down. I then spent about 2 hours taking apart/breaking the old antenna- a 1/4 wave radioshack with a Francis hotrod 5.5ft as the radiator. After 30 years it did not want to disassemble. Anyway, I then put up another home-brew antenna made from a...

    Base Beam Antenna Question

Hi, The driven element will be the one with a match (gamma, beta), where the coax goes, on it. The reflector will be about 5% longer, and not driven. On a three element the director (front) will be about 5% SHORTER. Point the driven and/or director element at who you want to talk to. HTH. John.

    First thread and need help.

If you have a VOM (volt ohm meter), check the wires in the mic from the mic to the connector. A broken wire is usually where the coily cord goes in to the mic or the connector. That's where the cord bends the most. HTH, John.

Yet another dumb ????? (about TOA's)

Thanks, Henry. That helps a lot. I got another question. On your plots above, am I correct in assuming that would be a side view of a vertical antenna? I never saw this kind of stuff 40 years ago, and am still learning. Thanks, John.

Yet another dumb ????? (about TOA's)

So.... I did "Google" it. I did read the TOA myths, for the third or fourth time. Based on the description of TOA in that article, I can't see where you can have very much of a change in 20 or 40 feet of height. Maybe in miles, but not feet. I imagine a teeter-totter with the fulcrum at 20 to...

Yet another dumb ????? (about TOA's)

See, I learned something today. It still don't seem right to me..... but, I'm old, now. It's been over 50 years since I needed Ohm's Law (or, what the color codes on resisters mean). ARRL manuals are your friend. Thanks, John.

Yet another dumb ????? (about TOA's)

Quick question that I don't know the answer to. If you change the down angle of the ground plane radials IE: 90*, 45*, 20*, does that change the takeoff angle, significantly????? I've seen it discussed about impedence IE: 90*=36 ohms, 45*= 50 ohms, and ~20*= 75ohms, but, not weather that...

    How to: push-up masts

FYI, I ordered a small 22foot ez-up today. It's got to be easier to push that straight up than trying to wrestle the antenna, coax, and 10 feet of mast on to the top of another piece of mast. Now, to find some help to get my old temporary (30years!) antenna down. Thanks, John. PS: Mudfoot: I...
