    End fed di(mono?)pole construction

Welllll.... You cannot feed an end fed half wave directly with 50 ohm coax. I don't want to talk down to you, but that is a high voltage and therefore high impedance point. Instead of 50 ohms the impedance is on the order of around 4K, give or take a couple hundred ohms. There are a...

CB jargon on the amateur bands

WW, by "wide umbrella" I mean people from all cultures and walks of life, economic strata, religious backgrounds, etc. That, and the wide area of interests the hobby can accomodate-- some like old AM gear, some like to pound brass, some like to mess with satellites, some SSTV, etc. etc. And...

CB jargon on the amateur bands

OK, I don't mean new Techs on 10m. I cut those guys some slack and sometimes explain some of the ropes in a friendly way. Everybody's got to start somewhere. That's the main reason Novices and Techs have fewer privileges-- a place to learn without causing any damage to themselves or other...

    DIPOLE GONE WRONG, PLEASE HELP

I understand your frustration, I've been in this game a while and it can really make your blood pressure rise when you've done a lot of work and things don't go as you are certain they should! It's possible there's nothing wrong with your antennas. It's been mentioned here already, but 6 and...

    Starting a new yagi today

OK- 20's not in the greatest shape, but that can make for a good antenna test. Again, these are just informal tests and I don't pretend they are the equivalent of precise measurements. But-- boom height is just over 1/2 wave on 20 meters, rig used: Icom 718 into my old Heath SB-200...

    Starting a new yagi today

I generally avoid contests for the same reason I avoid the mall on Christmas Eve, but FD at least confirmed the antenna works. I've not had a chance to wring it out on 20m in a sane environment yet but I have had gotten to test it on 10m some-- and these are just anectdotal observations made...

    Field Day 2010

Great photos, looks like a nice comfortable operation position. How'd it go on 40 CW? I operated some on 20 and 10 (1D) but wasn't in the contest. All those 1, 2, and 3 calls who were really in Florida can make things confusing! I like the tower base mount also. And aren't those Alliant...

    Starting a new yagi today

OK, got it on the air just in time for FD to start. The bands aren't in great shape this afternoon, but we'll see if I can get an idea of how this thing works. Rick

    Starting a new yagi today

Thanks Homer-- I was thinking about that earlier-- will probably have to push the fish tape through from the outside, tie a string onto it, pull it back outside, then tie it to the cables and pull them inside. Heat and dust-- yay!

    Starting a new yagi today

Well, dammit. Ain't gonna happen tonight. The pitch of the roof is such that I can't get to the coax coming up through the soffit, so I'm gonna have to come up with plan C or D to get the feedlines into the house. I've been doing this since the early 70s and have never had so much trouble...

    Starting a new yagi today

Thanks for the kind words-- between the weather and work stuff I have had all KINDS of delays with this project. I'm just about to start hauling stuff upstairs as soon as I drink this Diet Pepsi, and will have the coax run up through the modified soffit vent before dark. If 20 is open at all I...

    Starting a new yagi today

OK- in the air now. Final weight 18 lbs, boom height 36 feet: The shack still hasn't been moved upstairs, but I toted the old TS-520 upstairs and ran the rotor cable and coax in the back door and put the Kenwood in a dining room chair. I had emailed a friend who is driving between...

    Ground Plane Contest

Understood, and fair enough, thanks. I've left my 20m dipole up and have an Antron I can use for a comparison antenna on 10m, so I can do some A/B comparison. It'll still be anecdotal tests though. There just happens to be a 10m beacon about a mile from my house so that should help with an...
