Sounds to me like the problem is poor setup. All knobs (settings) to the right will certainly produce crappy sounding audio just like you describe. I've heard plenty of 7000's properly set up and if the operator had not said what they were running, no one would know the difference between them...

Nice radio and works pretty good. One thing to watch out for is problems with the display. I had two of them that the numbers would jump while tuning but, the radio did not actually change frequency. Careful cleaning of the rotary encoder fixed that. Good luck and hope you enjoy your new radio...
