anytime you can get your antenna away from any metal objects the better. so yes fibreglass would be better.
if you dont use a 1:1 balun or air choke balun. run your coax out about 4 foot @ 90 degrees away from the feedpoint.

you need an external watt meter to know what your radio is doing. yes when they type DK they mean your radios resting carrier with no modulation in AM mode. 2-4 watt carrier should be just fine.

ummm AM does not use shifts in power. it uses a carrier and 2 sidebands. the sidebands are were the modulations takes place.
like the oreo cookie example that most use to explain it.
the middle white stuff is your carrier, and the two outer cokies are the sidebands. then sidband is just that...
