Staying with VHF / UHF is pretty simple. When you go HF below 10 meters, things get kinda complicated quickly, and antennas get BIG!
My advice, start small.
Do NOT use a cloth, you will likely just damage the contacts. There is a special tool available to clean contacts, but I sometimes use a piece of notebook paper cut into strips of a size to fit in easily, dampened with contact cleaner. You insert the strip, and while holding very light pressure...
Mole, marine antennas don't work that way. The coax is sealed into the antenna to avoid corrosion. He will have to cut the provided coax short, solder on a PL-259, and use a barrel connector to add a length of better, low loss coax if he chooses to go that route.
Personally, I think his best...
Wouldn't be any good for "portable" use, as they are glued in place, and kinda difficult to move around. Also, I hear they are pretty picky when it comes to exact alignment of the plates.
I have to agree! Pretty nasty looking repairs.:scared: Joints look cold to me. You would think that with the supposed quality of service and product you are paying thru the nose for, they would have just replaced the entire board. The repairs don't bode well for long term customer satisfaction...

Then what's the point of adjustable power?
Personally, I think you need a better, bigger boat. I don't go offshore in a single engine boat, unless it is a trawler with a get home engine. My life is just too valuable. Remember, offshore, one word is key to survival...REDUNDANCY!
Throw on a transom mounted kicker, with a separate fuel...
Hey Mole,
Remember that ALL CG antennas are as high as they can be. Fixed station is on a tall tower, and the small boats are up high. To the OP, shakespear, among others, sell extension mast sections that screw on the antenna mounts, and accept the antenna section. Or, the makers sell TALL...
Well then,
Fill the gas tank. You MUST attend a testing session SOMEWHERE. No way around that. Find the nearest one, get a date, STUDY, Study some more, take the test. If you have to travel far, study up on all the tests you want to take, as when you pass the tech, the following tests are...
