This is the picture I referred to above referencing the small element visible through the plastic grille. Fairly easy to see if you click on the picture to blow it up. Just in the FWIW Dept. ;)

Palomar's website lists it as having an electret element. In the one photo it certainly looks like a typical small electret cartridge behind the front grille.

Canada gets bad press. I'm just across the lake from Canada, it's not that bad.

You already have my feedback on Bob's, from this forum and elsewhere. Despite the alleged "fact" that Bob's radios cannot communicate beyond a few miles, I somehow am lucky enough to manage to routinely hold mobile to base conversations from 40-50 air miles away with either of the dual final...

I don't know about you, but I grade Bob well above the level of "truckstop hack", he doesn't volt finals with speaker wire, remove limiters, or cut traces. I realize that nobody's perfect, and you can't always please everybody, but I find the quality of his workmanship well above average...

This is what I used previously, I had it on-hand from using it on my boat's wood.

Wow. I must be luckier than most, all three of the radios I have from Bob's routinely successfully communicate from 40+ miles on AM without additional external power.....(y)

I've used spar varnish for this purpose, it contains a UV stabilizer for outdoor marine usage, plus it retains some degree of flexibility. Never had any issues with it.

As a side note in the FWIW Dept., I routinely talk 40+ miles from my mobile to my base with a Bob's tuned barefoot Galaxy 88 and a Sirio P5000 mag-mounted on my deck lid, using a random length of LMR-240-UF. This ia measured as interstate miles over rolling terrain. I haven't tried this using...
