    SWR any reason to worry??

Both the old Palomars I have in my mobiles raise the SWR when they're on, but are still under 2:1. Haven't had any problems.

    What hapened to

Haven't had the opportunity to deal with DTB yet, but I've had real good luck with Bob since the only reliable tech we had locally retired a while back. The Galaxy 88 in my Tahoe is one of his radios. He's about an hour and a half drive from here and I try to stop by whenever going to or from...

    What hapened to

I've done some biz with Al at Sparky's and found him great to deal with. Even when there was damage done to the equipment I got from him that was totally due to my negligence, he volunteered to take care of the problem for me. Although I appreciated the offer, I couldn't in all good conscience...

    What hapened to

Some of the tech guys here should go over there and check out the post under amps about the guy who's going to start building his own amps. First a 1x2, and then a 1x4 with "800 watts of duck smashing power". Should be interesting.

    SKYTHUMPER MIC

I replaced a 636L with a ST-65DX and reports from people I trust say it's louder and has a deeper tone than the Astatic on my Galaxy 88. Just my $.02.........

    homebrew antenna question

Thanks Guys, that's the input I was looking for. Sounds like a vertical Moxon is the ticket for Camp. Figure I'll just point it back toward the "Big City" and be done with it. It's a sure bet it'll work better than the 1/4 wave GP that used to be there.

    homebrew antenna question

Speaking of Moxons............ Been toying with the idea of building one "just because I can", as RFO stated. I've never talked to anybody who has first-hand knowledge of their performance, just a lot of 2nd hand "facts" from the local "experts". Any of you guys here with way more...

    Overheard yesterday.....

Stopped by the CB shop at a local truckstop yesterday to pick up a couple of PL-259's and overheard a driver asking the tech: "I was told to get my SWR's checked. How many should I have in about 12 foot o' antenna wire?" Didn't have the time to hang around for the answer/explanation...

    11 year old A-99

The A99 I have up now was purchased circa 1989/1990. Was stored in the garage for about 6 of those years. I did give it a little touchup with sealer before putting it back up this time. I know they take a beating on a lot of Forums as "bleed sticks" but never had a problem with before when I...

    Yagi better than ground plane??

Personally, I think the simple fact of the yagi being directional with nulls off the sides and back is enough reason to make it a worthwhile addition, especially in crowded areas. The added gain, to me anyway, is icing on the cake.

What's your favorite 'vintage' CB rig?

Many years back, I had a Tram D201 that was a real workhorse. More recently, I had a modded Cobra 142GTL that performed flawlessly. Never should have sold either rig.

    Astrobeam/Astroplane Question

Marconi & CD- Thanks guys, perfect, exactly what I needed to know. I'll pass the info along to the people who asked me. I knew I came to the right place to find out. See ya 'round Campus......

    Astrobeam/Astroplane Question

A question came up recently about how the old Astrobeams were constructed. I wasn't sure but I'm positive one of you guys here will know. Was it simply an Astroplane with a reflector and director added? Was the driven element isolated from the boom or was it Plumbers' Delight construction? I...

    Sweep Tube Amp Question

That's roughly what I have in mind. I understand I can get my 1x3 retubed with 31LQ6's. I'm slowly getting my station set up after an aprox. 10 year layoff. Have one tower up now with a homebrew vertical 2 element quad and an A99 for an omni. Another good weather project is putting up the 2nd...

    Sweep Tube Amp Question

Thanks to the people who PM'd me and posted replies to my questions, I've got a better idea on which direction to go. I have an SB-220 available for use after we finish a wiring upgrade this Spring as part of a larger remodeling project on the ol' Homestead. Was hoping for an easy fix on the...

    Sweep Tube Amp Question

I have an older sweep tube amp in 1x3 configuration using 6je6's. Given the availability and cost of NOS tubes for this, what is the feasibility of re-tubing this with something more readily available like EL509/519's, or maybe 572B's? (Although I suspect I don't have the voltage required by...
