What defines a good contesting amateur radio transciever ?

As far as QRM goes, My early DXing experience was learning to live with the Russian Woodpecker, Duga 3. For a number of years it was completely wiping out my receiver at random intervals most of the morning and somewhat less as the day progressed on 20 meters. Being on the west coast (Seattle)...

What defines a good contesting amateur radio transciever ?

Well then if you are not going to work some of the stations in contests because of that then I would not contest other than just for casual DX contacts. You'd have a hard time competing seriously if you won't work some people here and there. Contesting and even DXing can be a dog eat dog world...

What defines a good contesting amateur radio transciever ?

Mostly depends on how you want to operate in a contest, like what category you want to enter. A lot of the big boy contesters use Flex radios. Antennas are always more important than the radio. In some situations a rig with two receivers can be a plus. A rig with good filters that won't get...

Looking for some info on my vintage radios

Back in the day that those two rigs were commonly used, The Turner line of mics were extremely popular. The Turner Plus 2 was very popular for a base mic and the Turner M+2/U was popular for mobile rigs. The Turner Plus 3 mobile mic was also popular after the M+2. If you are not so interested in...

    Ice storms vs Quad

I have a 5 band Lightning Bolt quad. It has fiberglass spreaders and they have never been a problem in about 15 years and a few snowstorms along the way.

    Switching radios, 1 antenna

Yes it can but you want a decent coax switch to do it. There must be adequate isolation between the switching positions. Myself, I only use Alpha Delta switches for that.

    Tax on Out-Of-State Purchases

Ebay has been collecting sales taxes for some time now too if it was not mentioned. It's a drag but we had it pretty good for quite a while. Easy guess that it would only be a matter of time before sales taxes would be collected with online purchases. The government doesn't like losing that...

    NRD

Nice find! They were a popular radio back in the day. As I recall they had a 6EU7 in them for the audio which is hard to come by or expensive when you do these days.

    CW Virus

Lafayette 99-4607 mic to a Lafayette Comstat 23

It is relay switching. Kind of a funky looking mic. I had one a while back. I just prefer the Turner plus 2. I have a Comstat 25A I need to work on. It has a blown cap and the on/off switch is always on like the contacts are fused together.

    Comstat 25A On Off Switch

I picked up an old Comstat 25A for just a few bucks a while ago. it is in pretty good shape but needs some TLC. It worked okay, received and transmitted etc. before a cap blew! It needs the lamps in the meter replaced The weird problem with it is that the on/off switch in the volume control is...

    Turner SSB Transistorized restoration

This one is a little dark; And this one below is a bit too silvery; But thats not to say all plus 2 paint was the exact same anyway. You can adjust to your preference. I think it's gotta be a hammertone finish to look good.

    Turner SSB Transistorized restoration

I bought this to try. It gives the hammered finish of the plus 2. I am not sure how close the color is yet. I have another spray can but it is just a tad dark and not the hammer finish. It looks pretty good though. I will look for that can too. The cap doesn't look good in the picture as it...

    Channel 30 crystal

Since there were only 23 channels total when those kinds of radios were made (early to mid 60's or so) with separate transmit and receive crystals for each channel or as in this case a VFO for receive and individual crystals for each transmit channel it is unlikely you'd EVER find crystals for...

    Citronics Catalog '68

I used to love getting those catalogs back then. Henshaw's was a good one. All that cool stuff that I would never see in a local shop around here!! They are still fun to look at. You see the catalogs up for grabs on Ebay once in a while.

    Base Alliance HD-73 Refresh

That's okay. It's done and there if you need it. I have three of them in various states of disrepair still. I got all the parts together just the other day. I am retired now so not much excuse! I forgot about this thread until I just saw it now! Thanks for bumping it up!
