To cophase or not to cophase

Also, everything you'd likely EVER need to know about operating mobile is covered here; https://k0bg.com/

To cophase or not to cophase

I didn't real all the posts so may have missed something but... My thoughts are that 10 meter mobile is quite a waste of time these days. 10 meters is mostly crickets other than during a contest. CB radio is certainly much more useful. 40 meters is always good when mobile (or otherwise) but not...

    running out of load adjustment

What amplifier? What band? A little info would certainly help!! An Ameritron Al-811 on 80? Not uncommon. Just need more padding capacitor.

Gain Antenna who has Practical Knowledge

A Yagi, say a 3 element Yagi, Is going to be a whole new world of CB radio, or on any other band for that mater. Locally it could extend your range quite a ways.Hard to put numbers like miles to it however, too many variables. A horizontal beam is great for "shooting skip" as you can usually get...

Rarest cb / export you’ve owned

When did the export radios start showing up? Did they show up right when CB went to 40 channels from 23 or was it sometime later? Was there a company that is known as the first to come out with an "export" model?

If FCC gave CB 50 watts

It's not worth their time nor money. Enforcement goes primarily to the concerns on the broadcast bands where big money is concerned and they have more responsibility to look after those concerns. I would imagine that their policy is not to care about anything on CB as long as it stays on CB...

Opinions on using computers for decoding and encoding CW

Back when bugs and straight keys were far more common I just got used to hearing them and could "interpret" more styles or vagaries in keying. Some locals that I heard a lot I could tell who it was by their fist and signal strength. It can be kinda distinctive.. I remember in a CW contest a...

dx-440 Realistic from 1990 RCA antenna connection

$200 puts you in the used category of communications receivers. Around $400 gets you to some new things like this Alinco receiver. https://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/commrxvr/0084.html Emergency stuff like police and fire requires a different animal, a scanner radio. A lot of it is digital...

    THRIFT STORE FIND

I picked up an essentially new in the box Icom IC-R71 receiver and SP-3 speaker at a thrift shop a year ago that was left there to sell for the owner who put an ad on Craigslist for $100. The shop owner seemed real disappointed at the $100 price so I gave him $150. Still a heck of a deal and...

    Key up box with switch

If the radios you work on have all the same mic connections you could dedicate one mic as a troubleshooting mic and wire an external switch, like a foot switch, to the mic connector. You could wire a pigtail into the mic connector and then have a couple different kinds of switches that you can...

If FCC gave CB 50 watts

They don't understand that radio as a hobby is all about discovery, finding things out, actually learning some stuff. You are very limited in all that if just staying on CB. Some will find the motivation to go far beyond that and some will not. Shooting skip on CB doesn't even begin to hold a...

Opinions on using computers for decoding and encoding CW

Never had a need for it. But if it works for some that is great! I don't get into many pileups anymore after 40 years of chasing DX. I'll know when P5, 3Y, and FT/G get on if they ever do!! Pileups in contests are not that hard.

Opinions on using computers for decoding and encoding CW

Sometimes spacing, more usually using a bug (banana boat swing) instead of electronic keying. I don't hear many bugs being used anymore but they are certainly out there. I have one but don't use it much. I might if I had an older transceiver I was messing with that didn't have an internal keyer...

Opinions on using computers for decoding and encoding CW

Learning Morse code is like anything else. If you want to badly enough you will. Determination and dedication to the task is what it takes. Computer decoding of CW only works so well. In a perfect situation it should decode it perfectly but that is rarely the case. It might do okay enough in an...

Ham gear on lower side band 38

Some truth to that but for the largest part everyone is going to go to the band that has the most activity. 10, 12, and 15 are not going to be it these days. Most everyone will be on 20 and 40 for the most part. On 10 the "go to frequency" is 28.380 or .400 or close to that. Someone with a CB...

Ham gear on lower side band 38

Yes many people do this and it is nothing new at all. There are of course at least some hams that are on CB with ham gear but many with ham gear are not hams. Just CBers WITH ham gear. A little history about it in a nutshell... Before CB was started in '58 or '59 ( I forget which it was) 11...

If FCC gave CB 50 watts

Maybe always did! I worked in a ham/cb shop when the 101E and EE was first out and I bet Cbers out bought the hams there 3 to 1 or more. I was amazed at how many buying them were not hams. it may have not been that way with the earlier 101 models but by then the word was out!! Around here I...
