If you took any pictures of the flea market post them up.
It would be fun to see what was available and the size of the event.
Kind of similar was Ten Tec used to hold a parking lot ham fest event every year. I had acquaintances that lived nearby and said that they normally saw nice...
Good luck with studying for the exams. Be careful that you don't psych yourself out and over prepare.
As Mudfoot says the two antennas you mention aren't the best choices. Personally if you aren't stuck on just those two I would suggest a basic fan dipole for 20 and 40 as your first antenna...
Between the two antennas you are asking about I would go with the Windom.
I would also encourage you to look at the ZS6BKW.
For the next few years 20 and 40 meters will let you hear the most activity.
In any case a 50 foot tree for a support will be a big help. Also it possible not running...
Interesting topic. I was aware that production shifted between countries and also that there were different version of radios like the Madison and Grant.
So I checked some radios I have and they were produced all over the place. My Cobra 148GTL was made in the Philippines. So then I checked...
Nice score the price seems pretty good for both of those especially with the Cobra matching speaker and the desk mike for the SBE.
For their vintage they look in great shape. Some radios have just been treated horribly and look like it. I've backed out of deals a few times when the radio is...
I love the look of the Tram D-201. I had a chance locally last year to buy one and when I researched it, I decided to pass on the radio.

Brad - congrats on being in a position to make this choice. Either of those 3 radios would look great on your radio bench.
Over the years I've owned a couple of Madisons and enjoyed them but never managed to have a 2000. So the 2000 is my bucket list radio. But since locally the SBE radios...
Thanks Rob
I had looked at that a few weeks ago. A quick and dirty wire version of that will let me test how well an attic antenna can receive.
I did make it to a hamfest this weekend and a guy actually had a scanner discone antenna for sale. But his asking price was pretty close to retail and...
A homebrew scanner antenna might end up being the route that I go.
The attic is already a bit of an antenna farm with several receive antennas -
a 66 foot loop, a fan dipole and FM broadcast band omni.
After looking at antenna prices on Aamzon, at the last few hamfests I've been watching for a decent deal on a scanner antenna. So far I haven't found anything. My radio room is in the basement so a scanner antenna in the attic would be a tremendous improvement.
I'm concerned with any proposal to remove amateur radio privileges from any frequency range, even if I don't operate on that band.
To me it's important to stand together and defend existing privileges. It can be a bad precedent if industrial or government groups start a frequency grab and don't...
The Elecraft transverters offer some flexibility. With the change of an internal jumper you can select either split input / ouput through BNC connectors or the single coaxial style. Also selectable the input power level.
I've used a couple of the Elecraft transverters but honestly didn't have...
Elecraft has sold a line of transverters for different bands for many years.

You'll see people selling these fairly often.
Unless you are interested in weak signal / SSB on 2 meters it would be more cost effective for FM to get a 2 meter mobile.
It will be interesting to see how the drones deal with stuff like at my house where there are dipoles going over the top of the house (above the front porch) to trees in the front.
