Regarding the Xiegu radio. I have a friend that is constantly ordering the various Chicom VHF and UHF mobiles and is continually disappointed in the small size, poor ergonomics/build quality and weird operational and programming methods. Also complains the mikes are poor quality and so on.
Then...
If you don't mind the smaller form factor of the IC-7300 that is a slick radio with good performance. I hear people on them all of the time so there are a lot of them out there with a good track record. The display with the water fall is visually very nice.
The FT-3000 is known for having a...
I agree that it's awesome that some people run out and buy all the new radios that come out. It makes for a lot of entertainment to read the forum posts as they figure out new features and any initial problems or issues.
But for me the big thing is that the early adopters help fuel the...
I get that 6 meters isn't interesting for some folks. But over the course of 7 or 8 years I made thousands of SSB contacts on 6m during the "season". Roughly May to July of each year. The majority of those were made using a 3 element yagi at only about 25 feet. That was all 48 continental...
You have a pretty good budget for jumping in. As several others have mentioned the antenna is a very important part of a total radio system. It's also valid to get a lower end radio so that you have more dollars to put into the antenna.
However I've got a another perspective to consider. If...
First my disclaimer - I don't run amateur gear on 11m.
But think about this you have a couple of guys running some presumably nice sounding good gear, that are probably more radio savy then many others you will hear on CB.
They are doing exactly what you want - they are creating more on...
Thanks for posting that is interesting.
I like having a separate 2 meter yagi.
What I would like is an economical 6 and 10 meter combination. I wish MFJ or someone would offer this in the US.

The Dayton (Xenia) special for $1699 shows the direction that the price is going to end up at. I'm willing to be patient and let the early adopters and Icom sort out any technical issues.
Meantime my 910 well more then get me by until the 9700 price settles.
At the hamvention I didn't get a chance to look at it. The couple of times I went past the Elecraft area the crowd was more then I wanted to deal with.
Funny contrast the Kenwood area was a ghost town the 3 times I went past them.
Alan nice work and the pictures with your write up help understand your project.
The proximity of your antenna with the trees may not be ideal. But at this point you have done the work and may as well try it for a while. Also trees should have less effect on HF then on VHF or UHF.
That is a...
This is the most important part when considering a radio of this age. If you aren't able to do the work yourself it can be frustrating and expensive.
On the other hand if a particular radio is on your buck list then you may not be concerned with potential maintenance issues.
For me I have a...
The nice thing is that the MC-60 has been around for years and is fairly common used at hamfests.
Another plus is that if you have that mic you are good with a lot of different Kenwood HF rigs.
I am glad that Icom made the investment in designing and bringing the IC-9700 to market. Hopefully that will encourage Kenwood and Yaesu to make similar efforts.
Having options other then rigs like the TS2000 is great.
My antenna situation is kind of limited, so I'm not a hardcore VHF DXer...
I'm not a huge fan of digital modes, but FT8 has become very common / popular on 6 meters. So dug out my Signalink USB and set it back up for the first time in years.
Over the last week, I've made about 100 FT8 contacts. Even though I don't really like the mode, it was very cool to see Japan...
Gary I looked at the Kenwood 599 twins as well. They looked pretty good for that price. I've accumulated a TS-830 with most of the accessories so resisted the urge to bring home the 599's.
As always it is a blast to see that much used & vintage gear for sale.
I went through the Kenwood and Yaesu areas indoors on Friday afternoon and both of the new radios were drawing a crowd. The Yaesu was sitting out where the back was visible while the Kenwood was more difficult to see the back.
I'm not anticipating being in the market for a radio in that price...
That is an awesome story.
Back in the day a friend had at Astrobeam mounted about 30 foot up and as i recall it did very well on sideband. He could hear a lot of stations that I couldn't when we were talking locally (no skip).
