I like the new radios, but it's great to see the radios from that era that established a company like Yaesu in the US.
Lots of respect for people that keep older rigs in action.
Did any of you that went to Dayton this year check out the cool vintage Yaesu gear display at the Fox Tango booth?
They were behind the Yaesu booth.
I don't recall noticing anything like it last year.
Very nice - that is a good find and it looks great. I've been looking for a TS-830 at local ham fests and the ones I've seen over the last couple of years have all been in very rough shape but were priced like they were pristine.
My goal is to build a TS-830 line system. It's kind of worked...
Thanks for the feedback. Every antenna has a degree of compromise. But the bandwidth sounds pretty good. For a light weight / low visibility antenna it seems promising. When researching the CobWeb last year it was apparent with the smaller size yards / "gardens" in England that the small...
Noticed that MFJ is now listing a CobWeb antenna.

In the past I've read over the websites of guys building the CobWeb antennas.
Here is one:

To me it seems like a cool concept to have a 5 band...
If you want to play ham radio then I would recommend a radio like the FT-450 or IC-718 you talked about in another thread. You will get a lot higher quality radio that will let you access other bands.
I would not recommend a CB type radio with the 40 ch readout and beeps and echoes. The noise...
What is your 6 meter antenna?
Over the last 5 years, I 've made thousands of 6 meter QSO's around the US, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Those were with either a 3 element or 5 element horizontal yagi at 25 feet.
Listen on 50.125 the SSB call frequency. (I've made zero 6 meter FM contacts...
Congrats and have fun. If you want to get a big jump on WAS (Worked All States) be ready for this weekends Sweepstakes contest.

If you put in the time you can make a ton of quick contacts and get a lot of different states in your log.
Speaking of log if you...
I've seen Icom 271's at hamfests for under $300. Also watch for Kenwood TS711 or the TR751. The Icom 275 and Kenwood TM255 will usually be above $300.
If you don't mind the age there are older Icoms that pop up.
If you like HF and are looking at radios there are IC746 Pro's with 2 meter SSB...
I agree 2 meter SSB or weak signal is not nearly as active as it used to be. However amateur radio has a lot of different niches for people to enjoy.
Personally I have no use for HT's and working through a repeater. But for some people they have a blast and that is their thing.
I like...
Wow you registered here just to post that again?

Good grief do you have an axe to grind?
Page 21 of the owners manual has reset instructions. You can find the manual at http://lmgtfy.com/?q=yaesu+ft-990+manual
If the radio developed the problem after the radio was in storage or not used for a while you might also want to check the status of the backup battery.
I've seen a lot of old 23 channel mobiles go unsold at garage sales for $5. So the Midland is a nice radio but I wouldn't expect much out of it.
Isn't the TRC-11 a 5 or 6 channel crystal controlled radio? That is a novelty but again for most people of limited value.
The Cobra and the...
Agreed there can be different types of antennas.
My thought was that with a rough measurement in conjunction with a picture it would also potentially help someone that recognized the antenna offer better feedback
Measure the length of the antenna and that can help with a ball park idea of the frequency range.
For reference note the length and frequency coverage of this antenna:

The Icom's are in a lot higher price tier.
To answer your question for HF + 6 meters I would definitely pick the Kenwood TS590 of the models you listed.
The price difference between the TS590 and the Icoms would let you setup a nice antenna and even consider an amp.
As Fourstringburn mentioned...
Have you tried plugging in an external speaker? Just in case there is a problem with the internal speaker.
Also the manual mentions that you can turn the audible tones off an on. So that might be worth checking.
The transceiver is preset to sound a tone each time you press a
key. To turn the...
