I would just get an MC60A, I have always loved that thing whenever I had kenwoods, it's a "can't go wrong" mic for all of their radios. Great sound, has tons of gain to drive any of them well.
There's also a way to flatten the SWR on a 102" whip that works pretty well, I used to cut something a tech that I used to know would call a "beta loop". Basically you would take la single length of about maybe 8" of 12GA solid wire, I usually used insulated stuff like out of romex...
Because of the 10 year licensing cycle, and 2 mouse click renewals, this number is somewhat meaningless. It doesn't really depict how many people are actual active on the air. Sadly I think while the number of "valid" licenses are up, the number of active operators of all types is...
Another thing I discovered.... the low current powerpole inserts are basically worthless, like the 30A ones, well, nobody in their right mind would be able to use those for something carrying 30A. So just buy 45amp inserts when you restock, you can basically do up to about #8 in those but...
I've recently invested in these things too, they are great once you figure out how to use them properly. The only thing I don't like about the smaller ones is they are obviously not as solid as the larger ones like the SB50 are, but it's still a great product and I've rigged up my power...
My Palstar PM2000 was actually very accurate, for a total of about 10 minutes. Then something "went" inside it (although no smoke or any signs of such damage) and it only reads about 50% of the power. For that 10 minutes it was pretty damned close to my 43, I was impressed and...
IMHO for basic use the Diamond or Daiwa switches are decent, but I wouldn't subject them to any serious load or abuse.
The alpha delta ones are better but eventually those get wonky, too.
Basically all the antenna switches that actually aren't junk are all electronic and involve relays...
IMHO they'll never admit it but there's a statistically significant amount of equipment that gets unlocked and used on 11M and elsewhere (mars, etc?) the moment it hits someone's shack. Part of the reason the FT-920 for example, was a huge
turd was the fact that, when it was released, a...
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see this as a "CB vs Ham" thing, as much as it is like brand/type loyalism etc, a lot of people can get their ego bruised when someone craps on their radio for any technical flaws it might have. I let go of that stuff a long time ago because it...
I've seen plenty of hams with the same issues, look at any HF radio review on youtube, about 80% of the SSB RX videos you see, the operator has not tuned in the other operators correctly, and I can hear it with my own ears. Now as afar as a bunch of
exports sliding around? sure...
I don't agree with people "hatin" (I think people should buy what they want to buy) but I think in some cases it might just be a well intentioned post by the respondent to get someone to "graduate". I mean lets face facts here, I can go on fleabay right now for 500 bucks or less and buy a...
I guess it depends on where you live. Basically my 2820H gets annihilated by the
stuff, depending on the frequency. Then again these days most of the dualbanders
do, which is sad. Outside of that if it wasn't for the tinny, constricted TX audio I could
forgive the thing. I...
This is true but if I buy 10 Bird 43s and 10 of the same slugs, and set them up with my bird DL and one of my radios and set it at say 100W, I can guarantee you that most of those 43s are going to be pretty close to one another. The reason people chase Bird and CD meters is the...
Depends on what I'm trying to do with the radio. On most modern radios the important thing is to not be doing what I call "shooting blocks" or blasting outside the
ALC range.... but if I'm pushing the radio hard getting peaks up to 2/3rds or more is
common, if I see overshoot off the...
Everyone says that, without acknowledging that one s unit in RF terms is huge..... that said, I think an external amp is more convenient....namely given that if an amp smokes, at least you'll still have a radio.... not to mention you wouldn't be welded into a 2950... which is still mostly an...
Just to add my .02....
Icom 7300 and 7600 have great NB/NR function in them, a quantum leap over stuff like the 706. I bet the 7100 is also decent (given its adjustment range) but haven't gotten
one of those pups yet.
The 775 DSP and 781 had decent NB, for their time, but it's not...
Yeah it is, and it's a good thing. My point is these divisions exist, and I'm going to go out on a limb here, but WRT this forum, most people here are really in the 3rd group, not the other two. The other two are too busy whining. The rest of us are doing our thing, just like...
IMHO this is one of the things that, over time, has always destroyed radio or people
getting into radio. The problem is we have 3 types of operators, a bunch of mindlessly pious and judgemental hams, some excuse making cbers that make excuses about not getting licensed because they...
