I have a PDL2 I'm going to assemble in the spring, but need to buy the wire that goes around the perimiter of the radials. Does anybody know what ga. copper wire I should be using? The manual does not specify.
tnx,
preacherman...
That's because you haven't heard one where the audio sounded like it had loud machine-gun like static superimposed on the carrier. I'm not just talking distortion, I'm talking loud "pops" as you talk.
YMMV

Yes sir...you're right. My complaint is that if I use an echo, it is only to use a slight amount that makes the audio sound a bit bigger (or wider ;) ) If I want to do that on my 200...I can't do it without having talkback as well...and if I'm using an amplified microphone, feedback quickly...
Had one...got rid of it. There is info on cbtricks.com to adjust the amc and the carrier levels, but you have to be very careful because if you turn up the audio too far, they begin to distort. They are not as loud as you might expect for 50 watts, but I guess if you get one cheap, it's not so...
I personally feel that talkback and echo are features they could leave off of every radio...that and the roger beep. One so rarely hears an echo that is properly adjusted...and it seems that some radios (such as the Cobra 200) see fit to link the talkback and the echo so you can't have one...
What kind of drive wattage (both key and pep) should I be using with a Thunderbolt 101 sweep tube amp? Is 3 watts swinging to 18-20 too much to put into it?
tnx,

Call away. It was doing 3 watts to nearly 100 when I got it, but the audio was raspy and nasty. I turned the key up to 5 and have turned the modulation back until it will still hit peaks of 100, but on normal speech it's doing 80+. That isn't the way my earlier model worked...but it is what...
I have a recent one...and all bulletins were done. The adjacent channel rejection is better...but still not in the league of a grant xl or 148. Mine is a very good talker and will probably end up in my mobile It's very strong on low power...5 watts swinging to nearly 100. On high, it's set...
Very similar to an S-3. I had one...was a great talker, but if you use talkback..the control is on the back of the radio, which is a bit inconvenient. I bought mine used...got a great price and would do it again. Sold it because I wanted a ssb rig.

I bought mine used and I think it was modified for talkback because it comes out the external speaker too....at lower levels even with the echo turned off.
I hate it :x How does one remove the talkback?
tnx,

Great classic radio...I own two.
One is kind of rough and one is mint...channeled and unlocked, but not even peaked and tuned yet. I also have a Cobra 200 and although it has way more power, the recieve on the 2000 is just as quiet and the selectivity is far better.
I like them alot...
YMMV...
If you go to CBtricks.com, you can find out which pot controls the modulation. OR...you can send it to Wizard in Chicago www.wizardbuilt.com and he will set it up for you.
I had him do mine and low audio is NOT a problem keys 5 and swings over 90 on low...keys 30 and swings to 140 on high...
Was just going to say that. To my taste, the audio quality of the old plate modulated radios...Tram, Browning and many others simply cannot be duplicated by the newer solid state rigs. They don't always put up the big numbers...but if people want big numbers, that's usually just the throw of a...
I have both a Tram 201 and a Browning Mk 3. The reciever is more sensitive on the Browning, but better channel rejection on the Tram. Both radios key about 6 watts and swing to 25pep. The transmit tone control should work...or at least, when functional...it DOES work...makes a big difference...
I'd be careful with the 4300....it get's pretty hot. Inadequate cooling. The 4600 OTOH, will get attention. Big audio on AM. Not as stable as some (if you are in a cold climate) on ssb.
YMMV
