I worked the Azores, Russia, most of Europe on 17 meters, mobile, 100 watts with a Hamstick. That does not mean the Hamstick is a "great" antenna, I would rate it "fair". You can stick a light bulb up on a pole and make contacts. I don't know why you guys limit yourself with crap antennas...

I would go with a trap dipole or fan dipole/inverted V. Windoms have too many funny lobes and nulls. G5RV is a primarily a 20 meter antenna, that is so-so on some other bands. I do not understand the fascination with the G5RV to this day. And, yes I have used one, decades ago.

A "Peak Envelope Power"/"Root Mean Square" switch????????????????? Is that CB lingo for SSB/CW????????

Put up a tower, with an inverted V. If anyone asks, those are the guy wires for the tower, you have not decided what kind of antenna to put on the tower yet, or don't have the money to buy an antenna, yet.:rolleyes:

My best DX on 17 meter mobile, was about 800 miles east of Moscow, total distance of 6080 miles with a hamstik type antenna and 100 watts. There is an article on the eHam website about making a hamstik type antenna more efficient. You strip all the wire off and use some coil stock and #14...

Worked RY9C from the mobile on the 7th of July, 17 meters. 100 watts and a hamstick type antenna, cowl mounted. 6080 miles according to QRZ.

Just spent 2 weeks at Moto in Schaumburg, attending Astro 25 and MCC7500 school. Place is HUGE. They are on a 400 acre site in the middle of the city.

What wavrider said. I cannot understand the obsession with putting up crap antennas, and then trying to get them to work by using a tuner.:confused1: Yeah, the antenna looks "good" to the radio, giving the operator a false sense of security, but that does not mean the antenna is an efficient...

Another vote for a mobile. Trying to use an HT mobile in an area like you are describing can be very frustrating. Get the mobile, and do a proper mobile antenna installation. (NOT a mag mount).

RG8X is only good for low bands, not a good choice at all for 2 meters.
