I think a Kenwood TS480SAT is a good rig, as well as the TS590S. I have had an Icom 7000 and did not care for it. Did not like the rx audio and too menu intensive. Kenwood has buttons on front panel to get to the important stuff.
Nice! I think the 4-1000A will take 6000 volts on the plate, should play well.
I have found that running 4000 volts on 4-400A's and 3-500ZG's makes them play VERY well. May try 5000 to see what happens.
I see the 590 has an extra RX antenna port on it. Does anyone know if this is an in or an out? Wondering if it would be possible to hook a second rx to this port and share the main antenna the 590 is using in rx mode. Also does the 590 have a dual watch feature?
Anyone here run 17 mobile? I hear a lot of stations mobile on that band. Even heard two mobiles, one on west coast other on east coast talking one night.
Just picked up a "Hamstick" type mobile antenna for that band at a local hamfest. Thing is huge, looks to be 10 feet or more. Will hook to...
Update on problem...
I think I have finally figured this out. First I am replacing the entire tank coil bandswitch assembly, because the 10/15 coil was butchered, and the 10 meter position in the bandswitch is burned out.
Second, I have determined that half of the stator AND rotor plates on...
I am getting heavy RFI on 6 meters when the temp drops below 45 to 50*. Everyone in the neighborhood has heat pumps with "auxiliary heat strips", or resistance heaters in the 10 KW range. It does not appear to be my unit. I may have to go on a fox hunt, next time the temp drops.
Problem is...
Interesting discussion. Around "here" just about all the hunters have CB or marine radios in their pickup trucks for coordinating hunting activities. Lots of business band radios in pickups as well. We have a lot of hams in the area that run 40 meter mobiles and have screwdriver antennas on...
Use one of these when you put up a dipole. You will be very pleased with the results.

You always want the lowest noise figure possible, no matter what the mode. 7 or 8 db noise figure is absolutely horrid. A preamp with a GASFet will give you .5 db noise figure.
Also, 5 db of line loss it quite bad, you are loosing 75% of your signal at that level.
I try for 1.5 db or less...
