Bad idea. Rifle bullets shot horizontally (even if fired at near vertical angles) will come down with enough velocity to kill a mile or more away. Plus, when the police retrieve the bullet downrange they can always match it to a particular weapon.
Small birdshot, OTOH, fired up into the air...
Can somebody help me out here and give me more details on this FarmerDave Encoder Mod?
I've combed through the files under "the_mod" YahooGroup, and haven't seen any reference to this. It's obviously not the original mod using the 27C32 eproms. Maybe an update using a PIC uC? I suspect...
You have to excuse me because I've been out of the scene for a few decades.
I think I'd like to get a Cobra 148 GTL to play around with - peak & tune, add some mods, etc. Obviously I'm looking at the old side-mike units.
It seems like everyone favors the radios made in the Philippines, but...

And Paws - I like the Magic Marker job. Definitely adds flair.
First I'd thoroughly buzz out all the wiring again. After dealing with several "modified" D104s you never know what people are going to do to them. I'd check for continuity from mic socket pin 3 to terminal 3 and pin 2 to terminal 2 & ground, and make sure pin 3 has no connection to ground...
From the schematic on the bottom cover, the lack of an E/R Switch, plus the awkward hole drilled through the base plate, I'd say you have an original UG8 stand that someone added an Astatic TU-KIT to later, but now has bypassed back to an unamplified stand.
Here's a clean copy of your...
I just picked up one of these T747 Mic Testers, and being disappointed with the lack of any type of instructions, decided to open it up and start poking around with an ohm meter to see what's what. So let's blow the dust off this four+ year old post and list what I found:
On the left side...
