There are major glitches in this new forum software...that last post of mine was supposed to quote Gary's questions about the upgrade and antenna...that's the button I clicked...and instead quoted binrat...there is still work to do on it.

Take the General exam a week from Monday. I wouldn't pass if I took it right now, but I WILL be ready on the 18th. I have some memory issues due to one of my carotid arteries being 100% o9ccluded and that is making the questions about "what frequency is in the XXX band" give me fits...

Gary...now THAT looks great. I'm already keeping my eyes open for an external VFO so I can listen in one place while talking in another. That speaker looks good too. So far I only have the built in speaker...and headphones so I don't disturb the family...hehehe. Sounds like I also need an...

Back to antennas...how do I translate antenna rotator turning power, given in ft inches by the manufacturer, into size of antenna the rotator will handle, given in weight? In simpler terms, how do I figure how heavy an antenna a given rotator will turn when the rotator info available is inch...

I'm calling on 305 but hearing nothing but static. Is it normal for a solid state radio like the TS130S to drift while warming up?

I'm new, so this is a guess...but what I THINK I'll be usually doing is using the fan dipole 95% of the time, but when I hear a specific station that I know the location of and I can't QUITE get back to them on the dipole, I can point a beam at them and switch to it. Does that make sense...

Well...been making contacts, but still nothing on 28.305. So far I have 29 contacts...5 states and 6 Central and South American countries. I have discovered that my second antenna needs to be a beam of some sort after the fan dipole is up (still hunting a tree climber...think I may have one)...

Gotta get this fan dipole up. I heard a lot of 10 meter traffic yesterday but couldn't get through to any of them. Anyone want to come to Georgia and climb 70 or so feet up in two trees to set the screw eyes?

    Beginner ham antenna questions

I know. I'm not interested in running big power...I like my 100w TS130s...LOL. I was just wondering because I thought 1500w was the legal limit, and I was listening to a guy in CA on 20 meters a while ago who was bragging about the homemade 3000w amp he was talking on, asking how it sounded...

I know its open...I'm thinking ahead. I'll have the fan dipole up in a couple of days, and I'll have my general in a couple of week...but will it do me any good regarding 20 meters? Does much voice go on there? Because right now it looks like its mostly cw from dxmaps...but dxmaps focuses on...

is there anything similar to dxmaps.com that isn't so cw focused? I just looked at 20 meter and got excited when I saw the map...contacts all over the place. Then I looked at the list and it was all cw. I KNOW people use fone on 20...
