    Interesting Response to FCC

Sad thing is that Bill has basically said that he's going to appeal it endlessly, and if his license does get pulled, he's going the very next day and pass all the tests to be relicensed. The guy's a poster child for OCD....

    What would you do?

QRN, good luck! Hope the transformer hasn't gone south on you. I (for one) would really like to hear you on 3885 running the RCA....

Really small TNC for HF Pactor / Amtor?

Unfortunately, I don't think you can do full Pactor or AMTOR without a TNC. The TX/RX timing is way too critical to have your Windoze PC tending to other chores and trying to key-up on time. You're going to have to run a TNC. Now, with that said...for Pactor, there's only about 3 or 4 to...

    Icom IC-2720

I remember seeing something about repairing VHF modules somewhere on the internet...pretty much you popped the cover off of the module and reheated a solder trace that formed a stripline on the beryllium substrate.

    15KW

I don't believe that for one second. The only bad thing would be the power requirements: 208V, 3 phase at 85 amps!!!

    illegal amps ???

You wasn't the person who had to haul it home!!! :P The builder and original owner put it up on eBay because he "just had too many projects laying around". The only condition was "you win it, you pick it up". I drove about 175 miles to pick it up. It took 3 of us to load the power...

    illegal amps ???

I have also heard my elmer say that he blew up a 5kW slug in a Bird wattmeter one night...and set his curtains on fire at the same time. Now is the story true? Probably not completely. Is there a grain of truth to it? Probably so. Ham radio is like fishing and most other endeavors in...

    illegal amps ???

No you don't according to your own opinion. You need protection from yourself--because if it is capable of exceeding your legal limit, it will be certainly run above the legal limit. I suggest permanent modification of the equipment in question to fully comply with Canadian regulations. You...

    illegal amps ???

I think you're making absolute judgements here based on your opinion and biases. I have an amp that is probably capable of 2 KW on SSB. I never have run it above 1 KW for 3 reasons: A) I don't have a reliable QRO (> 1 KW) wattmeter. B) The rules say 1.5 KW is the limit, and that's...

    Freebanding causes FINE!

Wrong. They were fined because they operated on a frequency not authorized to the CB service and because they illegally modified a CB transmitter, thus voiding their authorization to operate under FCC Citizen's Band Rules. Read the discussion in the NAL, particularly Item 12. No where does...

Hollingsworth to Retire In January 2008

Wow, I thought Riley would get a more civil response than this: http://www.eham.net/articles/17849 That thread turned into a Rileybash.

Like this?? I did that a couple of months back.

    Morse Code- Round 2

Course, the bands have been really crappy too. Yesterday about 2 pm local I had to run 600 watts just to make a lousy European contact on 20. And never did get that station from Crete calling CQ. Contrast that with back in '95 and '96 when 20 was open all night long and 100 watts into a...

Popular CB Dealer gets cited for selling "exports"

What will be interesting is the day a dealer gets busted and the dealer says "Wait a Minute!!" "Here are my sales reciepts..and here is the amateur callsign of everyone who bought the radios...you see I read your citations and KNOW that these radios are in the hands of licensed amateur radio...

    Off Limit Freq's

It's funny. Going over to the "dark side" is not just a CBer thing. Fact is, most hams (if not all hams) have a yearning desire to: 1) Play Led Zeppelin backwards 2) on 6995 or 7415 KHz 3) and run 3000 watts of beautiful AM 4) on Memorial day weekend 5) and call themselves "The Voice...

Icom 718- ALC modification for AM possible?

You're right. I will admit AM is at least 50% and at most 100% duty cycle, depending on modulation.

Icom 718- ALC modification for AM possible?

Icom 718- ALC modification for AM possible?

LZ is dead on. Most rice boxes are only rated for 100 watts PEP. General rule of thumb is 100% modulation on AM yields a PEP that is 4 times the carrier power. 4 x 25 = 100. Factor in that AM is 100% duty cycle...I'd probably feel comfortable running the radio at about 15 watts carrier...

FCC Officially Releases Report and Order

So...how does dropping testing for code contribute to the "movement towards Excellency?" Fact is, the FCC, the ARRL, and W5YI want to make it as easy as possible to get a ham license. And they are willing to make any outrageous claim or modification to the existing license structure to...

R&O scheduled for FR Jan 24th

It won't. Not one bit. It may, however, cause some hams to leave the hobby out of frustration and never come back. Yep, pretty soon everyone will have an Extra, and what's left over will be grandfathered over to Extra. Within 5 years, there will be only one class of license, IMHO...
