With Imax I can talk 50 miles local consistenly to a specific station. Most stations local about 30 miles is the range.
When we get the rare local skip conditions it's usually in the 300-500 mile range.

Stable on SSB, good audio on AM and SSB. Not as SSB friendly in operation as Optima or Lincoln type for freeband and 10 meter but still works fine for that.
Can you do it? Yes. I'd say 90% of people who do peak their radios themselves do so without a scope. But there are a lot of crappy sounding radios out there so a high percentage don't do it right :)
That battery wouldn't have an effect on anything. Have you tested without antenna attached? Are spikes/hum still present? Have you tried a different plug in your house?
You have to determine if the noise is being caused internally or externally first. You can rule our external but unhooking...
Coax jumpers are often issues with amps. People use cheap jumpers with poor connectors that work fine until power is applied and swr spike with watts. I ran into this many time over the years. I now use the best coax jumpers I can find when using amps.
