    Need advice on getting started

I think if you get the study guides, and learn the material, that you will find CBs are practically dinosaurs and severely limited. Merely learning to answer the questions to the ham tests will get you your ticket faster, but if you study and learn the stuff, you'll likely become bored with CBs...

Wouxun KG-UV920R Price and Availability Update

I think a first time intro into the market, such as this, they are way over priced, and will move off the shelves at a turtle's pace. Only time will tell, but I think they are in for a sales disappointment though.

Yaesu FT-890 AT, what do I need to control this unit via computer?

Going to meet the seller today and see if I want to buy the 890 or not. Cross your fingers Scratch that, the seller let me know that when he hooked up the radio yesterday to make sure it worked right, the autotuner decided to not work. This am it worked again, but a little later it stopped...

    Alinco DR-635 versus the competition

Discontinued, or will not be getting new stock for a bit, it says. I could see the 8800 getting replaced, its a little dated. Perhaps they'll address the tiny screen and no back lighting finally.

    Alinco DR-635 versus the competition

You've probably already seen the eham reviews, some of which are legit, and some of them makes you say, really? You may also look at a leftover or used Icom 208, but I dont think it does xband repeat.

Yaesu FT-890 AT, what do I need to control this unit via computer?

Glad to hear. I'm pondering picking one up from a ham in the area myself. Looks like a decent radio, from everything I read. Not sure how the wife will feel about it though, lol.

Best Japanese HF Amateur Transceivers for AM Audio

I've read some reviews on the alinco, and the main complaint I seem to read is the mic. Everyone suggests upgrading the mic. Would you agree?

    WIReS?

From what I understand, its kind of like echolink, in that it lets you link to the internet thru your radio, but that unlike echolink, you must use the radio. Also, I think there is like one repeater in the country set up for it, but its big in japan. Other then that, I have no clue lol.

    COBRA 148F GTL $600???

Think it was a sibling of the Cobra 200, used to see them both back in '05 when I drove OTR. I had a 200 back then, and it seemed to work fine, didnt have the issues that alot had.

t minus 53 minutes till my HAM test

Think I posted my callsign before on here, but I can't remember. I kept the same sign though. No HF radio here, yet at least, and apartment living will make it tricky no less. They dont want visible antennas, grrr.

t minus 53 minutes till my HAM test

We had a gal as one of our VEs too. They told me I had about 22 or so right. Better then I expected.

t minus 53 minutes till my HAM test

I went in today myself and passed my general upgrade. For laughs I tried my hand at extra. I gave the VEs some entertainment when they checked my answers, lol.

    Modes of operation

You can only learn so much by studying, and reading. You will have to get your feet wet to really grasp and learn some of this stuff. When you can pass the practice exams on eham everytime, then go take the tests. Then jump in the water.

    Modes of operation

DOnt think it was mentioned yet, but the OP was asking about, is the band plans. Certain sections of each band are assigned for use with different modes. There are sections allocated to ssb, am, fm, as well as for data on 2m for example. 146.520, the simplex calling frequency on 2m, is...
