Both the 139xlr, and the 142gtl are great radios. Price seems about right if they work as good as they look. You might also look for a president/uniden washington, also a great ssb radio and can be had for a decent price.

Of the choices you listed, I'd go with the 980. Get one from a reputable shop and have it aligned. Don't skimp on the antenna, get the sirio and drill the hole!!! Welcome to the forum

If the mic isn't the problem, I would look for shorted wires, or solder bridge, at the mic jack, the pa/cb switch. Maybe look at the audio chip (ic4), the tx switch (tr21). May be labeled different on a uniden, those are cobra 29 labels. Look at the pa/external speaker jacks, maybe someone...

You are talking about your recieve audio volume, right? You have loud recieve in p.a. mode, with the mic keyed???

Have you tried a different mic? Rx wire could be broke somewhere.

If you want a big loud radio with all the toys for a.m., go for it. I'm not sure of their ssb performance, or stability, but would assume they're the same as the rest of the galaxys. If your main mode of operation is ssb, I'd think most here would tell you to lay down a few more bills and get...

We had two stores here locally. One closed its doors a few weeks ago. Went to the other today, which is only a couple years old, an employee told me they will remain open. No 60-70% sale for me...yet

The lescomm kits are nice. Good quality parts. Alot better than the expo kits. Or, you can wire through the pll chip and a couple switches. Works good too.

Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I think it depends on the quality of the crystals used. Some were not stable at all on ssb, and would warble badly. If you only use am, it should work ok. It may be worth a try though, if the kit is cheap enough. Dont get much easier to install x-tras...

My bad...sounds like something shorted or dirty within the mic. Maybe give the switch a good cleaning, try a new mic cord if its the original one. Have you tried it on a different radio?

I believe all the golden eagle radios had a squeal or ping on keyup. It was their trademark. It was caused by the rx not muteing quick enough, causing slight feedback, and (I think) can be remedied by removing a capacitor. It may not do it with a n/c style mic. I'd leave it be, adds to the...

Do some research on antenna's, mounting, and bonding. Put a good power mic on that uni 78, and a good 2-pill box behind it. You'll out talk most rigs on the road. If its installed right, do your research.

For a quick sale on CL or FB, $100-$125. Maybe $150 on an ebay auction. Jmo
