Low voltage will also fry your computer. That amp probably draws at least 40 amps at peak power, maybe more. That's a pretty big drain on an electrical system. If your lights start to dim while you got the amp cranked up, time to upgrade some parts or ditch the amp.:)

The mic gain doesn't change the deadkey. It will change pep. I doubt you have to worry bout frying your amp, as long as everything on your install is good. Get a buddy to listen to your audio on another radio, and turn the mic up till it starts to get distorted. Mark that spot on your radio...

Yes, should be able to wire it to the board, same as you would to the mic jack.

The p.a. function is a useful diagnostic tool. You can do a quick check of the audio section of your radio, mic's etc. But if you must, just use a multimeter to see which wires have continuity through the switch, while you have the switch in cb position.

What robb and sonoma said. If its an older radio, I would also replace the thick white insulators behind the chassis parts with mica insulators. May as well while adding heat sink paste. JMO

If the mic isn't the problem, I would say its a bad solder joint as sonoma said. Take the top cover off the radio, use a plastic screw driver, ink pen, or something non-conductive and probe around on the solder joints near the pll area, behind the channel display. Do this as the radio is acting...

Bad volume pot would be my first guess. You can test the resistance with a multimeter to see if its working correctly.

I had one of those one time. They become pretty broadbanded after time. They cause a lot of static, and can be a bitch to put up with.
