    Galaxy DX radios

yes, that SMT - Surface Mount Technology - parts just fall off the boards, after banging the radios around. Recently I repaired a RCI-2995 and soldered in an old "real" transistor in place of the SMT transistor (Q67 in the Amplitude Modulator) that was bad. they lightly glue the SMT...

If you were a pirate broadcaster, what's playing right now?

well, I was a pirate broadcaster. on 7417 kHz, 4915 kHz, 1610 kHz. I would build little AM transmitters with 2SC1969 and IRF510 transistors, from Radio Shack. used a guitar amplifier to modulate. back in the day, the 90's. it was so fun! got letters from all over. and bands sending me...

    RCI-2970N2 / 2950 IRF520 bias problem repair.

While working on my first 2970N2, from another techs hands, found the main transceiver unit was getting hot. low output. the IRF520 bias settings were way to high, and one was acting squirrelly, eventually damaging IRF520 Q62. With the shorting board and Q62 removed from the board, I...

    Galaxy dx-94hp no transmit

oh, when I said "they are cheap" ( IRF520 ) I mean low cost. less than a dollar. a good part. I used to make transmitters with these IRF510 / 520 / 530 / 540 MOSFETs. also good for powering up a relay. Radio Shack used to sell the IRF510.

    Two Tube No Name Amplifier

I worked on tube amplifiers, but them mobiles have that funky power supply, to convert the 12 VDC to high voltages needed. So if too much work to repair, I take the tubes out, and any good variable capacitors, and throw the rest out. Maybe you have a "Pal" or "Palomar" amp.
