That transistor that I circled is Q18, it's your limiter. It is covered in a glue that needs to be removed. The glues they used turn corrosive and conductive with age. If that glue has gone conductive, it can pull your signal to ground there. That is the purpose of that transistor, to pull the...

So, 2 ohms all the way down, and I guess 1 ohm all the way up. That's not right. When you feel up to it, take some pics of the inside of the radio, like these.... Behind the mic connector. Red, yellow, blue and white wires. Board directly behind the mic connector. You can see where those mic...

Ok, you should see close to 0 ohms with mic gain down, about 5000 ohms with mic gain up. I'd leave the radio off for those measurements. If you say it doesn't register, does it say OL, or open, what does the meter say? A few pics would be helpful.

Not voltage, resistance, first between pins 1 and 2.

    Uniden PC66XL meter no worky!

The new meters are sometimes real loose and the needles are kinda whippy. If you can free it, that's the way.

That guy always has good content, I have learned much from him. Thanks for sharing that Brandon.

    Uniden PC66XL meter no worky!

It happens, meters seize up from contaminants, humidity and shock. If the meter isn't seized, you can shake the radio some from side to side and the needle should move some. Replacements are available and a last ditch effort can possibly free the meter up, depending on why it seized, but I won't...

How much dead key are you seeing? At least it's switching to transmit, the led is changing to red, you have rx audio so your audio chip is probably fine. And the driver and final are making power, so the modulation transformer isn't open. If above resistance check is good, we may be looking at a...

Ok, I think you said you only have a dmm and a dosy meter? If so, and a scope isn't available, this complicates the procedure, but I will try. Using a dmm on the 10k resistance scale, probe pins 1 and 2 of the mic jack. Turn the mic gain knob back and forth, see if that reading goes from low...

Ok, just for starters I think your chip is okay. I will get back with you in the morning, it's bed time. Until then, with the radio unplugged, work the volume knob back and forth, completely, a hundred times, do the mic gain knob too. Then try it out. The pots get corroded and dirty if not...

Also, when you take the covers off, on the solder side of the board, run your finger along the pins of the audio chip with the radio on and mic hooked up. If you hear hum, that's good.

    Pc76 audio chip

It probably has the TA7222AP audio chip, 10 pins, along the right side of the chassis from the bottom side (speaker side). I would start with a voltage check of those pins. The radio is old enough, could have a faulty capacitor. Use the service manual for the cobra 29 ltd on www.cbtricks.org...

Ok. Try putting the radio in pa mode and plug the speaker into the pa jack. Can you hear anything? If you key the mic and talk, do you hear yourself?

    Pc76 audio chip

That's a big step, did you verify the mic is good? Also, the ext speaker jack has a switch in it to disconnect the internal speaker when you plug into it. That switch is known to corroded or tarnish, leaving no speaker audio, even if you never plug into it. I would try an external speaker first...

Per the service manual bill of materials BLBY-0209001 LB-209 113cn-6485z same for L27 and L30 Using the 113cn-6385z designation, seems to also be in a Galaxy dx-979 (L25) ECIFT12013, or L25 in a Galaxy dx2517,probably others. That's all I found so far.

    Mechanical echo

I feel like this continuous tape technique would wear the tape out quickly. It seems like a 12" loop of tape would wear fast, with the continuous reading and writing, er, uh, erasing and recording. Were replacements readily available, or could the loop be made with other readily available tape...

What year and why did you get into the Radio Hobby?

Since my first walkie-talkie, 1988 I think, I was obsessed with wireless. It wasn't really a walkie-talkie, it was a 40 channel cb HT, but I had 2 of them and my cousins and I terrorized the band with adolescent antics, not realizing that we were transmitting farther than an eighth of a mile and...
