A local brought me a box filled with parts, I know I can put it back together but I don't want to. Maybe if it was mine, and was free, and I had plenty of time on my hands. If I do, I'm looking at hours of work troubleshooting and replacing parts and ordering new parts. And, the guy says "it's...
Well then, you already know just about anything I could add, but for the clips, what size coax are you going to use, lmr100? 200? 400? That's still a sizable hole in the side of your wall for a penetration if using premade cables. I'm reading this to be a temporary setup, but I could be wrong...
You should post up the project boxes you make also, they're very sturdy and great. I might get you to make a tray or case for my tinysa and nanovna, something to keep tension off the sma ports. I saw one on a utube vid some time ago. If I find it again I will post it with some device measurements.
Being an ex cable guy (CATV and SAT), I never cared for wrapping a home in coax, it looks tacky and can detract from the aesthetic, if that's important to you. Are you on a slab or do you have a crawlspace/basement? Are you able to put pl259 connectors on?
I may be the exception, I never found a radio that I just loved above any other. I have found a few that I loathed. I have mostly old school rigs, not by choice really but by chance, as those were cheap or free and the locals here cherish theirs, mostly what I work on here but occasionally a smd...
Reminds me of reaching the spark plugs at the back of the engine. Getting them out is do-able. Starting them and not cross threading them, enter a rubber hose big enough to barely slide over the insulator.
Mine too, perfect working order, I've contemplated recapping, wouldn't bat an eye at that any other time with something so old, but it almost seems wrong to touch it. It sits for now.
Great job, glad you got it done. I want to add that to combat shakiness, I stop caffeine the day before. That takes care of most, but a good belt beforehand helps steady the hands, and practice your smd work on some smd electronic scrap. I have lots of stuff around that I can practice on...
Not paranoia but good sense. Just unplugging the antenna coax isn't enough. I unplug everything when I hear thunder, this stuff is too expensive to sacrifice to ignorance. I leave the TV hooked up tho, that thing deserves whatever happens to it.
Congratulations, you fixed your radio. Now a good alignment is in order. Also, look for any more glue like that and try to remove it. I have a 76xl here without the weather band and it also has glue on the limiter, but it's only lightly touching the tops of the components. Yours looks like it...
That's my retirement plan, assuming there are still serviceable radios then. I'm sad to see thru-hole disappear but the more I'm forced to work on smd, the more I realize it's not the end of the world.
