While waiting for my call to show up in the FCC database....

Thought I would assemble the Arrow 146 yagi this afternoon. Assembly was easy and straight forward, quality construction also. Not tuned yet. The Diamond X50 on its temporary mast on the patio. Been doing some good listening just 8 ft off the ground. And here is the old CB antenna which is...

While waiting for my call to show up in the FCC database....

Thanks KC9SQR, I appreciate the info. I will point the yagi towards Rockford and see what I can hear. I am a pretty good distance from Rockford but will try none the less. For starters I will only be 30ft in the air. We have some repeaters here with little activity, one of the reasons I am going...

While waiting for my call to show up in the FCC database....

Oh yea, this isnt the first complicated piece of equipment I have ever owned but it is far more so than cb radios. I enjoy figuring out how to use electronics etc. Yea. You re right scanner listening has given me the feel for the repeaters around here which will help, many of the operators...

While waiting for my call to show up in the FCC database....

Oh yea SSB would be alot of fun, my rig is FM only so I will be limited there, but it is a start. I have the Diamond X50 temporarily on the patio clamped to a 7 ft pipe just to scan the band and I have been picking some simplex activity and a few repeaters I could never receive before. Been...

While waiting for my call to show up in the FCC database....

Thanks KW9W, I haven't given any thought to contesting yet I am afraid. I will be getting involved in some nets I am sure. I am totally unfamiliar with working VHF/UHF outside of many years of scanner listening. I am familiar with many of the repeaters in the area from listening to scanners but...

While waiting for my call to show up in the FCC database....

I suppose I could read the manual several times for the Kenwood, that little radio is far more complicated than my FT 101, Uniden Washingtons and cobra 148's etc.

While waiting for my call to show up in the FCC database....

I am also waiting for 2-75ft lengths of LMR 400, rotator, and a mast bearing support to show up at the door, hopefully be here Tuesday as the weather is supposed to still be unseasonably warm then. So far I have a Kenwood tmv71a, Diamond X50 vertical, Arrow VHF yagi and a UHF yagi, 75 ft of...

2m and 70cm base set up

You can check your swr's with a CB swr meter by hooking it up normal and calibrating and without touching anything hook it up backwards, gives a reasonably accurate reading. Kinda of a neat little trick. No VHF SWR Meter? No Problem. -KB6NU's Ham Radio Blog

    Yaesu VX-8GR vs. Kenwood TH-D72

What is your QTH Alaska? Maybe it is I don't know. I understand wanting capabilities for emergency but I live in rural Wisconsin and I canoe, hunt, fish, camp deep in the woods and I am very hard pressed to get out of cell coverage even if I try. Your location might be different. I certainly...

    Yaesu VX-8GR vs. Kenwood TH-D72

I have to ask, why would someone want to transmit on aviation freqs? As a person who flies with his family I am pretty sure I am uncomfortable with the general pubic broadcasting on aviation frequencies. Am I missing something here?

    installing antennas at night.

I hear what you are saying, I just hate people watching me mess around with antennas and thinking they are worrying about what I am about to do next. Most people here are retired now and have nothing to do but yard work and worry about what the crazy antenna guy is doing. Having two children...

    installing antennas at night.

Good replies:D My wife says I spend too much time worrying what the neighbors think but in all honesty I just don't want to be the guy "ruining" the neighborhood. I have been here 15 yrs and I am still the new guy here. Anyway they will be really impressed when I start putting the vhf/uhf...

    installing antennas at night.

Does anyone else wait till night to install their base antennas? I live in a fairly nice neighborhood(no HOA) but the homeowners here are a proud people who always keep their yards and homes looking immaculate, and I do as well out of respect for them etc. It seems my antennas draw some negative...

would you consider buying a vector/sigma4 if it was built strong enough ?

In the early 80's some of us were "suspect" of those who were running Astroplanes which this antenna reminds of. We considered folks who hung these odd looking antennas off their roofs as peculiar or somehow mentally deranged. So I would have to say no. No offense to anyone who may like the...
