You have to really program it, for the frequencies in your area, doing it by hand is a mess. You need a programming cable and then you can program it through the computer look for CHIRP it is free. DOCTOR/795

Get a kl203p, I have ONE used it for a couple of years 80 to 100 watts on am/ssb feeding it with my GALAXY at 1 1/2 watts, cost around $70 dollars from H&Y DOCTOR/795
