I've got a P3AT and it functions reliably. It can't hit a barn at 30 yards, but will cycle fine. I had to take it apart to buff and polish it for about an hour to make it this way though. NIB, it's a piece of junk.

The extra digit on the external counter is why I went with the 949. IIRC all Galaxy DX radios have a plug for there counter. Why have one on the radio and an external counter? Also, I think the one on the radio can be modded so that it drops the first digit and shifts the numbers over showing...

If its a new purchase, get it from a reputable business that can unlock and realign it prior to shipping.

I wanted a 979 for a long time but got a 949 instead (good deal at that time) and then my 980 for a mobile. I haven't done the clarifier mod on the 949 yet but I need to get it done. The 949 drifts a fair bit. A freq counter was a good addition to it as well.

My local BB carries them, so no shipping. None of the computer shops near me have a server supply. Ordering electronics from fleaBay is hit or miss, but $20 ain't much and this BB PS is guaranteed to work 98% of the time, every time. I concur this isn't as good a deal, but an option for some.
