My conclusions were premature. The dashboard still cycles with the RF choke installed. I think I wasn't speaking loud enough or the dynamike was turned down when I tested it earlier today. Bummer.
Oatmeal or 720 on LSB.
Mobile, between Western Canada and the US midwest and sometimes the east coast. Rarely talk when the truck is parked at home, on the west coast.
A few weeks ago, I made my first DX contact in years since, just recently becoming interested in this hobby again. I was driving north through Saskatchewan and spoke with Dallas TX and Niagara Falls. We spoke briefly on 38LSB but it was really crowded so the guy asked me to got to 27.390 (?)...
Thanks to both of you.
Edit: all three of you...
In your opinions, am I correct in concluding that setting the amp at a lower level than would cause the above problems is safe?
Thanks.
Interesting. I just now tried it, here's what I found:
I took a spare length of coax, created the choke and hooked it up. SWR went down ever so slightly. 1.4:1 from 1.5:1 on 40. Ch. 1 stayed at 1.1:1.
The one giving me the advice tested the amp and showed me that running it past 11 O' clock...
I have a Texas Star 350HD installed in a Freightliner truck. It works really well when the engine is off.
When I key the mic with the engine running, the dashboard gages cycle, the warning lights and buzzers come on as if I've just turned the ignition off and on again. The advice I've...
I live in the Fraser Valley, but I've been bouncing between Alberta and the Midwest for 6 weeks or so. I finally bought a mag mount W 1000 to try on my Econoline when I finally park the big truck for some time off.
I was cruising along US 12 in SD today when a call came through.

This is "sky truck" - we're a USAF C-130 heading to Portland from Delaware. Flying hurricane relief.
Cruising at 22,000 feet.
Any thoughts?
On a Freightliner with a single mirror mounted antenna, I ran a braided piece from the door hinge bolt to the firewall bolt.
With or without, either way it is:
Ch. 1- 1.4:1
Ch. 40-1.7:1
My question is: does the bonding still help antenna performance or not?
How long did your Silver Load last? Mine just failed as well, it was less than six months old. Replaced it with a Trucker 2000. If this one lasts as long as the silver load, I'm replacing it with a Francis. This could get expensive.
Oh OK.
For the record, the work was done by Q5 in Deforest WI. and it was de- clipped among other things.
I figured out the problem and replaced the, less than six months old, Silver Load Wilson and have had good reports but only from a few miles away.
That $300 may seem outrageous south of the 49th parallel, but in Canada ( the seller is in Saskatchewan) a new 148 GTL probably sells for close to $250 and buying one on line and having it shipped across the border won't save much but will give better selection.
I paid $45 got a 510XL at a...
I operated my freshly tuned and checked vintage 148 with "pegging the needle SWR" for a relatively short amount of time. Keyed up maybe 20 times and didn't talk very long at any point before I realized there was a problem.
Everything I've read states that damage "may" occur if this happens...
I've been using a 510 XL, for about a month in my big truck, while my 148 is waiting for me to pick up at Q5 in De Forrest WI.
Seems to work very well.
Mic is physically small (2.75" L x 2" W x 1" D) but does not feel cheap.
Channel selector feels a little less positive than the one on my...
