    Did something stupid yesterday

Yes I keep my moonshine in the jars not my coax. My hf feedlines are not set up to just short to ground. I place them close to my ground buss so when/if they arc the will go to the buss and not the radio stuff. The new tower will have polyphasers and ICE stuff along with a switch box that...

    Did something stupid yesterday

Usually when I get threw fooling with my radio equipment for the day I disconnect all my hf antennas and lay them in a spot so when they arc it wont cause much of a problem. I went on vacation to enjoy one of my other hobbies "fast boats" and left without unhooking the feed lines. When I...

Need help to amplify my VHF marine radio for fishing offshore/ increase range

I dont think an amplifier would be the best route,it would help increase your range with other boaters but without a pre amp you would would not hear them. Get the best antenna you can and mount it as high as you can. As stated in other posts the coast guard is probably using antennas mounted at...

    FCC ULS Database Privacy?

Jeez ,that was a little creepy. I have met lots of hams after talking to them on the radio. Usually I would offer to meet for lunch or antenna party. I would never just show up at someones house unannounced.

Worse Case Scenario - Lightning Strike?

I deal with the "nec " at work and it can mis-lead you. The nec recomendations are the very least required to do the job, not the max. Forget about a direct hit, thats usually a total loss. As stated by "the jerk" grounding and bonding is to disipate the static charge from your tower and to...

Worse Case Scenario - Lightning Strike?

I was home during a direct hit on my tower. My neighbors saw the strike, it split just before hitting my tower one leg hit the ar 10 on top and another leg hit the service entrance. Lost the ar10, rotor,cb I had at the time, feed line was trashed, most all electronics that was plugged in was...

    OCF dipole

I have run many diferent wire antennas over the years and I keep going back to the loop. The noise floor will usually be less on the loop. I use the loop for rag chew I dont chase dx, maby thats why it works so well for me. The last test I made was between a fan dipole in inverted vee style, a...

    OCF dipole

Pick the lowest freq. your going to operate on, cut the length for that freq. Put it up with as much area inside the loop as possable. It doesnt have to be a perfect loop,it can be a square, rectangle, diamond, triangle or any combination. Mine is strung up in trees with no particular shape. The...

    OCF dipole

Yes plenty of room. 160 meter loop will be around 500-550 ft. A 75 meter loop will be around 240 ft. The one I have up now is fed with coax and a matching stub.It needs no tuner on 75, but for the other bands you will need a tuner. If you dont want to use a tuner the fan dipole is a good...

    A Question for the group

I think the money has an effect but is not the main hold back for new operators. 2 meters is cheep and easy, can be done in an apartment or just mobile. Some are happy to just do that and some will branch out into hf. The biggest thing I see keeping the new folk away is how they are treated...

    OCF dipole

Isnt it the Carolina windom "ocf" that used twin lead at the feed point to a balun then coax into the shack? Might want to try that route. Do you have the room for a full wave loop? Coax fed fan dipole would be a good choice also.

Friends having trouble with older straight Icom 706

My mIIg was doing a very similar thing, power up and then rite back off. Clicking then no power, no display problems though. I sent it to burghtart for repair, they said they found a broken trace in the power circuit on the board. Charged me 170 bucks, but havent had a problem since.

    THE BEST WIRE ANTENNA

Just build the super loop your self. The plans are on the net. I would just put up a horizontal loop in some trees and feed it where you can and go with it. I use a 75 meter full wave loop fed with coax and a tuner. Works fine. Coax fed loops will start to do strange stuff on the higher bands...
