    QSL's

You mean QSL cards? They're often used for verification of actual QSO's for various awards, such as the "Worked All States" award. Personally, I simply enjoy exchanging QSL cards with folks with whom I've had an exceptionally enjoyable QSO. Welcome to this "radio thing," and don't be afraid...

inexpensive ham radios for 11 meter conversion ???

Check out a Yaesu FT-757GX. Its conversion is easy; simply throw a little slide switch on the PC board behind the VFO knob, if I remember correctly. Another good rig is the old Kenwood TS-430. I believe it is fairly simple to open up for general coverage transmit, too, although not as...

    QSL's

After a few years of "fun" making my own, I went back to "The QSL Man - W4MPY" because I liked one of his designs in particular. No more hassles with designing, printing, cutting to size, etc.; QSL'ing is no longer a chore.

FCC Denies Petition to Increase Size of Amateur Radio Question Pools

Well, C.W., from one "old elitist ham" to another, you surely recall back in the 60's when so-called technical wizards acted like complete buffoons on 75 meters (and elsewhere), QRM'ing each other into oblivion with seemingly endless levels of illegal watts, and making amateur radio sound like a...

    Fun Trick -- Crossband Repeat!

I used to have fun on MURS using my Kenwood TM-V7A as a crossband repeater. When I would be away from the rig, I would set the 'V7A to crossband repeat my Yaesu FT-50RD HT's FRS signals over to MURS, and incoming MURS traffic would then be repeated back to the HT on FRS. That way, my little...

11 meter mod for icom 706mk2g

Hmmm... I hate to feed the troll, but... a "waste?" I don't think so. A 706 makes a dandy 11 meter/CB/freeband rig! You can hear mine anywhere from 25 to 28 MHz. My 706 works great on the ham bands, too. It's not the best CW rig, though. For CW I prefer my Ten-Tec gear.

    Channel "3A" "15A" 19A"

Back in the day (1970's) I don't remember much "bootleg" activity on 7A or 11A, maybe because of all the splatter from channels 6 and 11. But I still give a holler on them (and other RC channels) when the skip is rolling, just in case someone happens to be listening.

Yeah, but many of them there started on CB. They just won't admit it.

MFJ 1020C SWL Active Indoor Antenna 0.3 - 40 MHz

I have the 1020B, which is pretty much the same thing. I bought it years ago when I lived in an apartment and didn't have outside antennas. I was disappointed with it because it just amplified the noise level. The signal to noise ratio stayed about the same whether it was on or off. About...

    TS-430

Unfortunately, that is quickly becoming an issue. Icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu are no longer making proprietary parts for the rigs of that vintage, i.e. optical encoders in Yaesu's case. AES' service dept. told me my FT-757GX is only worth $150.00 for that very reason. They won't even work on...

    EXTRA FREEKENSIES

Yup, especially when the skip is rollin'. You'll find mainly SSB activity above 27.405 (CB channel 40), and mainly AM below 26.965 (CB channel 1).

    Questions about Galaxy DX 2547

I've had my DX2547 for almost 2 years, and I like the rig very much. In my opinion, there's nothing "cheesy" about it. The only thing I didn't really care for is the mic; it's a typical Galaxy stock hand mic that's adequate, but nothing special. I use a D-104 on it, and get great audio...

    What about the "Freeband"?

If you’ve ever been freebanding down in the upper part of 25 MHz and the lower part of 26 MHz and run across what sounded like typical AM/FM broadcast radio and TV stations, what you’ve heard are probably Remote Pickup Units and/or Interruptible Feedback Units. From what I’ve been told, they...

    What about the "Freeband"?

I imagine that's probably due to what the guy at the above website observed: "Once 11 meters became overcrowded and/or unusable due to solar activity or the lack thereof, astute freebanders soon decided that they weren’t constrained to 11 meters. By building simple dipole and similar...

    What about the "Freeband"?

It's my understanding that 27.410 to 27.540 MHz was once a "business band," long ago vacated by users migrating to other frequencies not populated by freebanders. From the Frequency Allocations Chart URL provided by Ken White (thank you!), it shows that area with mixed land mobile, mobile...
