Generally,the rf gain increases the receiver sensitivity to pick up weaker signals.If you turn gain down you will only hear the stronger,nearer signals-if you turn it up you will hear weaker,more distant radio signals.Most people keep gain high especially when trying to talk skip.

I will replace the buffer transistor-if that doesn't work the radio goes on fleabay as a fixer upper and I buy a new Galaxy 959.

Would bad inductor coils cause symptoms like weak RX and TX? I forgot to mention it is a very clean,unmodified radio-the tuning coils are still sealed with wax but it appears that the original 1306 driver was replaced with a 2166-I don't think the different driver would cause rx problems?
