There has been about 4 radios that gave me so much hours of grief, I purposely left them up top high on a shelf in the Garage.. :D This way I can't get to them anytime soon. :)
Best you can do is just be careful not to move the wires so much. solid copper can only bend so many times before it just breaks. And when it does break, its going to be hard to find which wire.. But don't stress it too much. May as well make it a project to recap the radio and if you dont want...
From what I understand.... Capacitors leak and eat up traces. Unless I really valued the Super Base, I wouldn't want to recap the whole radio, replace or repair the VCO, and then hope none of the wires while working on it breaks on you. (They are a solid copper wire vs stranded.)
I hear that. One radio that will always be close to me is the slant face Sears Roadtalker radios. I need to bring one back out soon and use it once again. Bummer your Uniden Washington radios gave you grief. They are actually good. (Though, there were 2 variations of them, the 858 PLL or the...
I thought I had done the clarifier unlock the other year on the Uniden 980 SSB, but I must be thinking of some other radio I had. I did follow the youtube video on how to go about it, but I skipped the step on the diode to try and give the radio more slide. I left that part alone. This the...
I want to say its a 1st gen, but I will upload a picture of it soon. I just got done doing the clarifier mod for it. (I did follow the lescom youtube video, but I didn't take the extra step of the diode to try and give it more slide etc, just let it be. And I didn't have to remove the TX...
I hear ya. :) I now hooked up the radio, and realized I never actually did the clarifier mod for it... (I must be thinking of some other radio I did it to.). Display is ok and working. I wont get too involved in the radio and probably take it as far as doing the clarifier and leaving it be.
It was a few years ago, but I was shot down pretty quick when I was inquiring about a service manual for the radio. :D I at least tried lol. But you are right... 1st 980 SSB for some reason the board outright put out crappy power on SSB. Maybe it always did it and I didnt catch onto it. I got...
Another good day of contacts. I honestly do have fun on AM the same as SSB. I usually try on 22 AM when I do. Its been fun on this old Grant XL radio, but getting the itch to use another radio from the pile. :)
I did get myself one of them cheap testers off eBay. Was going through some transistors to try and match some sets of 4. After looking here, it says that turn-on voltage or "Vth" is the value you want to match. My question is, what if one transistor is 1.74v and the next transistor tests...
I am seriously considering getting a QT80. Seems like everyone is happy with the radio. I would use it in the mobile so I don't have to have a foot warmer attached.
The only problem is shipping. :) I dont know if I would be comfortable shipping something that big. I bought it from the original owner a few years ago. I didn't even open it up and let it be. I am from Kansas.
I think they were valued way more a few years ago vs now. But I ain't one to milk...
