Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

You guys are right! L40 is the wrong way around! Heres my VCO 5 followed by a pic of a VCO 5 from the net with what I assume is the correct orientation...I've never had it out so I didn't even think about that aspect.. My VCO 5 (L40 the wrong way around - I'm aware grey coax is unplugged in...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Thanks for the support as always. Brandon: R147 (tested OK) has 4.3v on its left leg as per pic (R146 has 4.7v both sides) Its mounted vertically so I cant prob the TP11 trace side without soldering on a fly lead?: Tech 5 and Brandon: And results of ohms test from D14 cathode to R146...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Well I just soldered a wire directly from TP11 to R146 as per your pic. Put it back in and now 4.7v on each side of R146, still 7.8v on TP11. Same trace and different voltage on each end - its messing with my head.

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Been looking at it again today, 4.68v on each end of R146 while still showing 7.8v still on TP11. Just trying to work through everything you said to me from your previous posts. I also removed C180 (10uf 50v electro) and it tested at 4.7uf so I just put in what I had on hand, a 10uf 25v until...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Nodens - Thanks for heads up on D13. I did retest it before putting back in my reconstructed efforts. 1.8v forward in one direction only using my DMM diode test mode, ie passes the diode test. Dr. Frankenstein - Thanks for the heads up on extra detail. I was having a look at that as I could...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Thanks for your help as always Brandon. I've spent hours since you posted that message and not much luck unfortunately. Q34 tested out of circuit (OK). Q35 tested in circuit while Q34 out (OK). Inspected Q34,Q35, TP11 traces think I found really small bridge (half diameter of hair) on Q35...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

I just rechecked, definitely getting 4.8v on the collector of Q35 (2sc2459 middle pin) as per the diagram. Tomorrow I'll get a chance to test Q34 out of circuit. Forgot to mention, I think your right re: D13, it has a high forward voltage (~1.9) when I tested it out of circuit (OK) while...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

I wonder if I should take out Q34 and test base to emitter as they are showing the same value...

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Thanks Brandon for that post - awesome detail for me trying to learn this stuff - appreciate it as always!. I put my measurements in blue back on the diagram below:

Kenwood TS440S Too high voltage in VCO 5 (7.8v versus 5v)

Working through a TS440S that I bought off ebay that had some of the glue problems in the VCOs and radio presented with DOTS problem. Previous owner had scraped out glue and touched up back of VCO 5 solder joints but residue ate through some components so I replaced/fixed where necessary...

    Can I substitute a 1N4148 for a MA858 Diode in a Kenwood TS440S

Thanks Nomad, really appreciate your helps as always. 1N4148 is going in tomorrow morning!

    Can I substitute a 1N4148 for a MA858 Diode in a Kenwood TS440S

Repairing a kenwood ts440s with the famous glue corrosion issues. Few of the components had legs eaten off and I am just working through it (dots issue) Wondering If i can use a 1N4148 in place of MA858?. I can half solder off the remaining partial leg of the working MA858 if a 1N4148 does not...

TS430S With one blown final (options please)

Sorry for the delay in reply. For some reason I didn't see your post earlier. I'll have to check if I get notifications. If you do a search on youtube for "Ham Radio - Kenwood TS-430S Maintenance and Adjustment" by Frank Evoked he has a great video on maintenance including removing the RF...

Cobra 2000 barely any transmit power going out ???

If you can hear it on the other radio chances are the pre driver/driver is working and the final is blown or final bias circuit problem. Could be an easy fix if it was just the final.

TS430S With one blown final (options please)

Thanks 9C1Driver, I'd rather the Toshibas but RFParts does not ship to Australia hence my HG2290s based on what seller posts to me, they are at US$32 each with US$30 Shipping and they will be matched.

    Cobra 138XLR low TX power

    I agree with Hawkeye351, I'd bias to 50ma for the 2sc1969.

    Cobra 138XLR low TX power

As an idea, I would check bias of driver and final to see if they are in ballpark ma. Especially the final from what you said. I had an blown (read open carbon track carbon trimmer) in the bias circuit of Realistic Navaho TRC490 (pc385) that was acting similar and everyone helped me work it out...

TS430S With one blown final (options please)

BTW, Has anyone here used the HG2290s and if so do they bias bias differently to Toshibas? (I get what Brandon is saying re: bias above) I think I'll place my order anyway but I just would of liked a bit of feedback from someone using them.

ok I found an ebay seller in USA that posts matched HG2290s to Australia for similar price as it turns out ICA manufacturing web page above only ships to USA and Puerto Rico....
