Thanks brandon, I've seen that page and its definitely my cheapest option I found online being matched HG's. I think I'll do that, I just hope the stock biasing will suit them.
Agreed, I will definitely check the circuit surrounding them before firing it up. That would suck to destroy the new...
Thanks Brandon as always for your advice. So your saying in series with the main power supply running the whole radio?
I kept reading like that in the service manual but it messed with my head.
With some of the online prices I'm unsure.
The HG2290 matched is probably my cheapest option if...
Hey Guys,
I picked up a cheap TS430S for a bargain and have fixed the RX and am now working on the low transmit power.
Looking at the RF final board I can see mismatched finals, one is a Toshiba 2sc2290 and the other is a Motorola Trio SRF1174 (926) pink dot. The SRF1174 is showing a base to...
Thanks for the comments guys.
Shadetree Mechanic: Just confirmed what you said with the input transformer grounded. Oh well class C it is! Thanks for letting me know.
I'm really good at buying stuff that just isn't quite what I'm after. It was cheap enough, paid less then what the MRF455 is...
Bought this yesterday locally. Was pretty excited to get what I thought was a 2 pill amp (from my google searches) thinking 100w pep on ssb here we come! Opened the covers this morning to see its a single pill MRF455. Most of my online searchs show a more modern version I think from the early...
Just a quick update: Transmit is 100% working!!!! After months going around in circles spending an hour here and there tracing voltages and testing components that all checked out good I worked out Q22 [SWITCH] base was not getting its 0.7v on TX and I kept loosing the voltage for it on the...
Fair enough. If you wanted to do that distance a 9 foot whip mobile would work his end but I would just build a half wave dipole for a couple of bucks for him and string it vertically if you are already running a vertical polarized antenna.
You would easily do 7 miles on SSB with good antennas. Back in the day a bunch of us locals on SSB talked 30+ miles away (using base antennas) that would of been impossible on AM. That was mixed terrain, few big hills plus flat open areas. I've always thought SSB had more range then AM.
Thanks guys as always. Thanks Nomad for the extra info as well. Was wondering about all that.
I think I'll pass then because that's my worry: how do I even know its accurate or would work for what I want to do.
I guess I'm always looking for a bargain!
Hey Guys,
I've seen a cheap 7 digit frequency counter on ebay. I've done a few searches on the net and see mixed arguments, some say its enough others say at least 8 digits to align HF radios. Whats your opinion?
This is what I'm interested in:
7 Digit counter that goes to 200mhz, no brand...
@Dr. Frankenstein
Finally got a chance to start looking at it today.
Your spot on! D35 is the culprit, lifted a leg and its open. Can see the voltage stop there as well that I expect to see up in the receive chain trace R75 is connected to.
Thanks for wasting your time on me.
D35 is a...
Thankyou so much for your reply, that's the detail I am after.
>If you understood how a radio actually works
Exactly! Thats my problem for sure! :) I don't understand the fundamentals which is why I've been teaching myself online the basics to how the circuit works.
I need to conceptually...
I agree its like the whole section is no getting power when on AM mode.
I just seen your edited response, I should of been more clear, this radio has a RX/TX led lights only. ie not band specific lights. The RX light (green led ) works on ssb for example. So i know the Rx light is good. TX...
Well a few months have passed and I have got nowhere on this (no AM RX). I've been trying, I don't think its a solder bridge as I've checked everything over and over many times with magnifier and continuity/resistance checks to make sure everything matches the schematic..
I gave it a lot of...
I managed to get SSB RX working much better and its close to being correct on volume level (still down a bit to what it should be but receive great). I found more dry solder joints throughout the board. I can't find any more.
I am still trying to get AM RX back. No RX light on AM, no volume...
Hey Guys,
I'm working on what I believe is a cybernet board: PTBM146AOX with a LC7131 PLL. This radio started my interest in trying to repair radios a year ago. Bought off ebay as untested of course :) Unfortunately I didn't have the soldering skills at the time and made a lot of beginner...
There is also the use of country codes in callsigns when DXing
Eg 43 Alfa Tango 001 , the 43 represents Australia, 001 is the individuals call sign.
Full list of country codes:

I guess country codes were used more in the freeband spectrum if you...
