At $589 its in my opinion a complete waste of money. They are much better radios that will run circles around this one. One that comes to mind is the ICOM 718.
I have a couple of Anytone radios, one uhf and the other vhf (1.25cm). They both work great but honestly the build quality is nowhere near the big three (Icom, Yaesu, and Kenwood)
I think that GMRS is becoming popular because radios have become more plentiful and the FCC lowered the cost of the license. I always thought that $75 was silly.
So which are you? I started in 11 meters in 1973 and left for good in 1990. I left mostly because the of crap here, it was all about who could key over who.
Unless there is a reason to update the firmware I would use them as they are. The ONLY benefit I have seen so far is an improved AM Airband receive, the update improves the ACG response.
