To start with, make sure it's not on PA mode, then do you have another microphone to check with?
1 broken or disconnected wire on the mike can cause that.
I am going on memory here but (can someone confirm) I believe Pin one is audio, pin 2 is ground, pin 3 is receive and pin 4 is transmit on...
Add another $419 and you got it.

This doesn't address the problem of not knowing what radio, what amp, what drive power he is using.
We need more information.
You can keep repeating the coax will fix it without knowing what is going on with the OP's situation but unless he answers the questions it just a guess.

If he is putting too much drive into the amp putting several feet of coax inline is going to do nothing to solve the problem.

If I had to choose, it would be the 300a over the 350z
I have ran both in the past, the 350z is a Hot rod.
In more ways than one, it tended to eat tubes and never made as much power as the 300a.
