I think your efficiency numbers are exaggerated. A roof mounted hamstick is about 10% at 3.5 MHz. The numbers change dramatically, with height above ground, vs. frequency. SL

I have run hamsticks, with great success. The worst antenna I have tried, is a Chinese ripoff of the outbacker from Opek. Also, as far as I can recall, that antenna made by Henry Allen, was not a motorized screwdriver. He made the Texas Bugcatcher antennas. The best screwdriver I have...

I have two of these that preamp works with power off. One is the DSS, the other is Firebird. Both have two DPDT relays.

What you are saying in regard to device tabs, being band specific, is just not the case. 2SC2097, 2SC2904 are examples of this configuration.

Some variants of that amp, have the ability to turn the preamp on, when the power is off. Some don't.

Check this out. Simple enough, but effective.

It could be the preamp transistor or a relay You need to figure that out. If you looking at the amp from the front, the preamp relay is on the left and you'll see a small transistor and a metal can that is your preamp transistor.

It's $100 amp. Get a better amp.
