Thanks so much for that document OldTech03!!
While it did address the radio overall it did not address the frequency alignment for the band board. I also used the alignment guide for the GE 3825A radio as a reference as it was almost the same. The fact that on the main board CT1 is missing and...
Ok, so every once in a while someone replies to a thread with the best comment!!
..."Although I now know where to go to find out how to rebuild a 78 Dodge Colt or a revolver." had me laugh out loud.
Well done!!!!
I had the same thought. It's so interesting that back then they just covered up labels on the faceplate with labels for the different features. While I would never pull those labels off I am curious to see what the original model was.
Hey Everyone,
So, I have this Colt-890 from a local op on the bench to see if it can be resurrected. A few things here. I have never worked on a Colt radio before and have never even heard of an 890. This radio is from the late 70’s, still in the original box, has a Cybernet board in it...
Greg,
I had to do this at my home. One day, unexplainably, I was getting 6 S-units of noise and my “normal” is less than 1. It was a hash (vs a pulse) similar to your video. My radio is on a UPS so I just shut the main breaker off and saw what would happen. The noise went away. I turned off all...
You men are awesome!! I was able to get the Sams schematic for the Midland version of this radio and that gave me a lot of info to check on based on your responses. I did a voltage check in AM and USB and was able to compare those readings against the schematic and the voltages were good. That...
So here is where I am right now. I have not had a lot of time the last few days because of work so I just left it on the bench turned on (let it bake for a while). This morning I went through the alignment again as a fresh start. The PLL alignment was close as I had done one a few days back. I...
Here is the story. The op bought this radio new in the late 70's. It was used as a base for a few years and put back in the box. The op asked for me to go over it and align it but, it had some issues. It no longer transmitted or received. The first thing I did was test it out. The op was...
Hi Dan,
Could you possibly provide the alignment location sheets for the Midland 79-893 from Sams 211 to compliment the alignment directions you have already kindly provided above?
Thank You!!
Hey Everyone,
I have a Spartan PLL 40 on the bench for repair and alignment. I have searched hi and low for any info on it. The closest I have found is the Centurion PLL40. I am finding that it is not the same. For instance, in the PLL section the Spartan has 4 CT's and the Centurion has 3...
I hope someone who understands these boards replies!!! I've worked on a number of these boards and always need to adjust CT4, 5 and 6 to get them on frequency. I am unsure how its on frequency without them. Especially with the fact that the crystals will change a little over time.
Hawkeye, I want to thank you for the number of times that you replied to my threads with some help and direction!! I truly appreciate it any time someone leans in to give me some advice. I tell everyone that will listen that if it was not for each of you I would not be capable of making many...
Hey Everyone,
So a local op asked me to calibrate his PW-5000 meter. When I do this I use my Bird 43 as the basis and adjust another meter to it. The op's do realize that it is only a relative reading so most are ok with it. This meter seems to be well built and seems like it could be a...
Well said!! When I retire in a few years I would also love to work in a shop with other folks fixing radios but mainly for the company. I too started my career in electronics at Bendix Aerospace, went into management, forgot everything I knew and learned and now am trying to remember my name. I...
Hi Everyone,
A local OP has asked if there was a way to convert his KL503 to HD. I looked over the schematics for both and the only thing I can find different is a connection from J1 to R12 and the addition of the 7dB attenuator (see below). Are there any other changes that need to be made?
