I am unable to locate the schematic, or internal photo, of the M+2/U that uses ONE DARLINGTON transistor. I found the schematic of the version that uses two discrete devices. That is NOT what I am in need of. The unit I have, uses a single 2N5306 device, for amplification.

You are right, there is enough factory C, if the radio goes that low.
I think you will figure it out. Overkill's was simple but effective. The Brazil guy that's hooked up with Troy, is awesome but impractical and just vaporware. Looks like you are in the middle, which seems like a good place...
I hate to rain on your parade, but that overkill mod, is simple enough for most people. The 980SSB is locked down hard, so something is better than nothing. I really like what that guy did with his mod.
In respect to VCO range, there may be something one could do, with a different varactor...
I think your efficiency numbers are exaggerated. A roof mounted hamstick is about 10% at 3.5 MHz. The numbers change dramatically, with height above ground, vs. frequency.

The worst antenna I have tried, is a Chinese ripoff of the outbacker from Opek.
Also, as far as I can recall, that antenna made by Henry Allen, was not a motorized screwdriver. He made the Texas Bugcatcher antennas.
