I've used mine both ways. When you get the unit, open it up and make sure that none of the coils inside are touching the shielding walls or the outer enclosure. For whatever reason, in two of the triplexers I've bought over the last few years they were...resulting in a "dead" port.

The circuitry is the same as used in their BC-2000 Base Console, albeit without the gain control. CPI's documentation states that the -2000 may be used at power levels up to 400W PEP...but after looking at the relays used in both the Base Console and the Range Plus, 100w is a far more realistic...

I used a quarter-wave whip and an HR-2510 as my 10M mobile setup for a number of years. Worked a lot of DX with the arrangement, and with just 25w to it the antenna did most of the heavy lifting.
This data used to be available in Popular Electronics magazine back in the late 70's and very early 80's.
Cobra 2000/148, Uniden Grant/Madison...anything built on that particular double-conversion platform got very good reviews, especially where adjacent-channel rejection was concerned.
