Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

Why would you be glad about that? Us hams are pretty much a tight-fisted bunch, and I can't think of any I know who would be glad to spend an extra $30 for a cable to make software that they've already paid $25 for, actually work with the radio the software is intended for, particularly if the...

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

The plot, or at least the "bull excrement" thickens... I had replied to Domenic (odd spelling of the name... makes me wonder if it's really this person's name or if it's (as is sometimes done in customer service to protect the representative from angry customers) an alias that they didn't...

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

Update: I had sent an email to the folks at RT Systems on the question about their software working with the factory supplied programming cable. Here is their response: Hmmm... pretty much any way you care to read that it comes out that they deliberately designed their software to not work...

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

I picked up one of these at a hamfest today and plan to use it to replace a Yaesu FT-8500 in the back of my truck that's setup as a dedicated cross band repeat rig. The Yaesu is nice but I've been having audio problems with it so it needs to come out for repairs. If this one works out then the...

    Wouxun KG-UV920P

Review, probably. Video, doubtful. Sent using secret methods known only to squirrels. And selected hamsters.

    Wouxun KG-UV920P

I picked up one of these at a hamfest today for $325 cash. I plan on using it to replace the FT-8500 that's set as a dedicated cross band repeater in the back of my truck. Going to be interesting, considering just reading the box gave me a headache, nevermind reading the manual. Sent using...

Has your Yaesu ever failed and need repair?

I currently own six Yaesu rigs, from HT's to HF, and only one of them ever needed repair, an FT-2900 that blew the final the first day I had the rig. HRO checked the installation, verified that it was blown and that my antenna was fine and replaced it on the spot under warranty.

    Icom IC-7100

Who did the labor? Your friend or Icom? Because, if Icom did the labor then I think that's a reasonable price for them to charge.

    Icom IC-7100

Well, given that they're touting it as "affordable" my initial thought was it would be under a grand. But then you have to remember it has DSTAR built in, so double that price. I guesstimate around $1,800.00 or so.

    Yaesu FT-400D

I wonder if any of the dealers at Frostfest (Richmond, VA hamfest on Feb 2nd - ARRL state convention) will have any of these? I was talking about it with the XYL and when she asked what the price was I told her it had not been announced yet, but probably around $800-900 and her reply was, "We...

    Icom IC-7100

It's not approved for sale yet but I'm really liking what I've seen of it so far: (all of the above shamelessly borrowed from the Universal Radio website)

    Yaesu FT-400D

Here's the tentative specs: I'm definitely interested, especially since it has a USB port and capability of sending video. Perfect for ARES work. If it will also cross band I might be putting my FTM-350 up for sale...

Gizmotchy 2 Meter 4 Element Beam Review

Sad to say, I've not done anything further with this antenna. For awhile I carried it in my truck, thinking to use it for some of the public service events our local ARC participates in, but it took up too much room and got moved out. Then I considered rotator mounting it on the house, but the...

Noob questions: receiving vhf from far away

He did specify "listening", so I don't think licensing will be a concern. :)

    Yaesu FTM-350AR

It worked just as I expected it to. I left the input of the radio set to "off" and the output set to "packet". That provided the data to the Nuvi but kept the radio on its internal GPS instead of the Nuvi.

Noob questions: receiving vhf from far away

Could also go with something like the Elk log periodic, which is just about 2', but I think with enough elevation the OP shouldn't have any problems picking up 1 watt VHF marine band portables at that distance. I used to regularly check in to a net held on a repeater (located on top of a...

Noob questions: receiving vhf from far away

The OP was pretty specific about monitoring the VHF marine band, not the amateur bands, and may not even be licensed. And he/she is 30km inland, not on the water at all. Oh, and hitting that repeater 20 miles away? Most repeater antennas are mounted well above the surrounding terrain...

Noob questions: receiving vhf from far away

In general, VHF is strictly "line-of-sight". In practice, there are a few conditions under which it can travel further (tropo ducting, etc.) and it will go slightly beyond the horizon. What this means to you is that you'll probably need to raise your antenna higher... quite a bit higher. 30km...

    Yaesu FTM-350AR

Okay, I can confirm that a firmware and map update on the Nuvi 350 does not interfere with it's use with the FTM-350. I just hooked up mine and was able to display beacons just fine.
