CW transmission question on Kenwood TS-850S

I am new to CW transmission and I'm looking to make my first transmission on the above transceiver. I am concerned about the two controls CAR and PWR. The manual tells me that to transmit on CW I only have to have the VOX button down and adjust CAR to ensure that the carrier is in the ALC zone...
