Interesting
Just so I know what you are saying
So all things being equal, People should always use a dummy load to measure their power output vs using an antenna. There are just too many variables with an antenna to be accurate.
I don't have 299.00 for an antenna tester. While I enjoy...
Dummy load vs Antenna
So here is the dummy load I have been using
Falcon Professional Ham CB Dry Dummy Load 150 Watts Max - #1 Falcon Antenna
And I have one I made myself with 2, 100ohm Non inductive 25w resistors and a paint can.
Same result across now 3 mag mount antennas.
Now I...
SO I just did another mosfet mod to a friends CB. (by the way , if you are buying the 520's get the VISHAY ones from Digikey. I got a couple from international rectifier and they really sucked) .
So when I test, I test with a 50 ohm dummy load and my Galaxy 717 SWR meterand am seeing a...
How about this
I was considering figgurig out how to drive this bugger with the addition of a better heatsink.

A bunch of issues begin to show themselves but are they insurmountable to keep it "in the box"
Now where are my screwdrivers.
Okay since I have had allot of fun modding the snot out of Old Cobra 29's with the IRF520. the questions now become "how far has anyone gotten with a Mosfet Mod?"
Has anyone taken it the next step? 40 - 50 watts seems to be the best you can expect from the current crop of Mosfets. But have...
looking at it from a tech perspective
Looking at the pictures at least the main body of components I see such as the finals and receiver sections are very very familiar territory. I am willing to bet any tech out there could tune this radio and even throw a mosfet into it without too much...
IRF520 and EN driver
Well I just finished with the THIRD cobra 29 radio (Chrome) with the Mosfet mod using the kit I put together. and we are swinging for the fences again with an output of nearly 50 watts ( I may back it off a little to keep the Mosfet from dying)
We used a different meter...
IRF520 - 510
Interesting about the discrete component, That one was for a different Mosfet mod ERF-2030 and not the IRF520. Not saying it doesn't work. but the "discrete component" In the outlaw-621 kit was just a switching transistor and a 270 ohm 1/4 watt resistor in parallel to replace R56...
Tuning after the Mosfet
I just got done swapping mine out and went to a local truck stop shop to get it tuned. afterward it is a boomer (on a china made no less) and now I am going to do the same for my buddies radio. (cobra29 NW ST)
Now I am very familiar with working on electronics, But...
All things being equal I was all set to try and do a 2SC1969 conversion of my old 29 ST NW radio . had the thing since 99 when it was bought new. But it has been sitting in a closet for a year after the original final had given up the magic smoke. (carelessness with the coax killed it)
So I am...
