Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

Power on UHF was just measured as 35 watts.

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

I never tried that and I don't currently have the rig installed where I can easily test this. When I do I'll try to remember to try it. BTW, what truck you assigned to? I drove ambulances in NYC for 14 years, mostly Brooklyn. Sent via the squirrel underground.

    Yaesu FTM-350AR Discontinued!

I love my 350, but I'm quite willing to trade up to the 400 (or 410 now)

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

I've not had a chance to get it on a power meter yet, but when I do I'll post it.

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

Moving on with the review, I've been experimenting with the cross band repeat modes on this rig. Yes, I said modes, plural. Most rigs that offer cross band repeat have one mode V/U or U/V, this one has four modes, and I'll be darned if I can see why or how they'd be useful. The first mode is...

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

I just wanted to make one important note about the cables used on this rig for the head to body connection and the mike cord. It is very important to bear in mind that the cable from the head to the body is not a standard "straight through" network cable, nor is it an A/B crossover. This cable...

And Colonel Bleep is getting really tired of it too! :D

    China Brand Dual band mobile

That's an entirely different radio you linked to.

    China Brand Dual band mobile

If it has 2.5kHz spacing I'm not seeing it in the specs listed on the eBay listing. Then again, those same specs claim it has an LED flashlight, a low battery alarm and it can be controlled with UV light, so I take them with a grain of salt.

    China Brand Dual band mobile

Without 2.5kHz spacing? Interesting! Sent using secret methods known only to squirrels... and selected hamsters.

    China Brand Dual band mobile

Not legally though... not with those specs and no type acceptance.

    China Brand Dual band mobile

Good luck on getting that mobile past Customs. Maybe you'll get lucky but maybe not.

    Icom IC-7100

The D-Star capability is one reason why I'm interested in it. I currently have a 706MKIIG mounted in my truck, and several Yaesus, but nothing with D-Star, and my DEC is really pushing for me to add D-Star to the truck, so I'm considering replacing the 706 with this and mounting the 706 in a...

    Icom IC-7100

With D-STAR? Dream on! It's like buying parts for a boat. Once that word "marine" is on it the price triples. Once it supports D-STAR Icom is going to take all the extra money they can from your wallet, and run laughing and giggling to the bank, thanks to their de facto D-STAR...

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

As I noted earlier, this being a low end commercial rig it includes a few things not normally found on amateur gear. I already mentioned the compander function as one of those things, now I'll move on to the remote control functions. Anyone with experience with business and public service FM...

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

Since it seems to be disabled on this rig I'm not sure how I could provide an audio sample for you.

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

Getting back to the radio though... Because this is actually intended as a low cost commercial radio it includes some features not normally found on amateur rigs. I've already mentioned the compander function so now I'll move on to the next unusual feature, the scrambler. Yes, you read that...

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

I did get another response from RT Systems today, and I'd like to post it, but we're getting away from the radio itself here. I'll summarize the response though by saying that they've now accused me of lying about the programming cable coming standard with the radio.:laugh: I will...

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

I'll work on getting some pics but I wanted to address the data port question. On the left side of the rig, under a rubber cover, is the programming port, which is your basic RJ45 jack. There's nothing in the manual about using this as a data port but I suspect it might be possible.

Wouxun KG-UV920R VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver Review

Sorry I've not been back to update this further. We had a bit of medical drama with one of the cats, starting the day I picked up this radio, and that has taken all my attention the past week.
