I wasn't active when the change went to 40 channels so my nostalgia is for the older 23 channel rigs that I drooled over back then. I wouldn't collect but a very few of them. I would rather actually "use" the 40 channel models especially if they include SSB. A 23 channel SSB rig doesn't do much...
Okay. Seem to have it all fixed now. I did the diode tester thing with my DMM and it went full scale no problem. Then I adjusted VR3 a little to get the indicated output to 4 watts. Maybe it's a bit high but that's okay.
Now in receive, the noise level reads close to the same as my IC-7600 does...
Saw this post a little late as already have been messing with the meter. I did the acetone thing to both top and bottom screws. Used a couple Q tips to clean things up around the screws. It is working better than it was. Not much at all on the band when I have wanted to try it out to see how it...
Thanks you guys! It looks like that is the problem with it. I've not run into that before. If you take the meter out to replace it you may as well try to fix it as in that video first. Looks like a new meter is about $15 but then there is the shipping cost too so I'd figure $25 roughly for a...
I picked up a Uniden PC66XL at a swap meet for 5 bucks the day before yesterday. It has the mic with it but that's all. It looks almost like new. Upon powering it up, it appears that everything works except the meter doesn't read any power output nor does it seem to work as an S meter although...
Most places for buying ham gear do. I usually stick with HRO but they are just down in Portland and I am in Seattle so shipping is very fast, sometimes next day.
DX Engineering is also very good and sometimes Gigaparts.
Sorry to hear you had this problem, it shouldn't happen with new gear ever...
I would try very hard to get something as new as possible even if it is used. Just less possible trouble over the long run. IC-7300 or a Kenwood TS-590 should be trouble free for a long time if cared for. I still use a IC-7600 that I bought when they first came out. I've been a ham for 53 years...
MFJ used to market a "Cantenna" dummy load but they went out of business recently. You may find one still in stock at HRO or DX Engineering or some other ham gear outlet. Call around and see if you can find one but don't wait too long.
I do often see them at ham radio swap meets but that is hit...
Neat old fully portable CB radio that isn't a walkie talkie! I have the 23 channel model of it. Had to replace the battery tray. They are often roached! You can find the trays on Ebay for a few bucks.
I couldn't find the right kind of rivets so used small flat head phillips screws to mount it to...
I spent about 2 years on CB and once I learned about ham radio got my novice license. That was in 1971. I never looked back much to CB after that. I have a couple closet shelf queens but only very rarely turn on a CB radio to listen around a little.
There is just SO much more to do with a ham...
I got a TS-50 when they first came out for mobile use. There isn't an easier rig to use when mobile! All the buttons in the different places are easy to remember what they are so you don't have to look at them to know what you are doing. If it had a separate control head I would still have it!
I was just thinking I might try to make one out of brass shim stock from a hobby store. K&S has a lot of that stuff in different thicknesses and sizes. I have nibblers and a Dremel tool. It might be tough to get a good straight bend though.
Has anyone got a good idea on how to replace the 9V battery holder or tray in the bottom of the Turner Plus 2 desk mic? They are usually made of a stiff cardboard that wears out and comes apart over the years.
Seems like it would be a good small project for a 3D printer! I have a couple of the...
Here in Seattle I have regularly scanned about 55, 144 and 440 frequencies on several nights from about 7pm till midnight. Not much going on! Mostly a few nets on occasion. I can either bring up or hear all the repeaters I programmed. Only 2 are very active, K7LED and the PSRG repeater. They...
I have one. it's a pretty good book with a lot of CB radio history in it. I wouldn't sell my copy of it. I don't think there are any other books that cover the history of CB, are there?
My first CB antenna was an Antenna Specialists Super Magnum. it had 4 full length steel radials. It worked really well. Went to an Astro Plane later on which also worked very well and was easier to put up much higher.
Back then, the Super Mag and the HyGain CLR-2 with 3 full length radials were...
There was a 22A and a 22B channel between 22 and 23. Not sure what they were for anymore. Seems to me 22A was an RC channel and B was a business band channel but not sure anymore. The way the 23 channels were set up with earlier crystal synthesizing, 22A would be there but there were no contacts...
Look into marine grade fiberglass paint. It should last longer than most other paint.
I have a Lightning Bolt 5 band quad. I just took it down for a few repairs after 15 years or so. It has fiberglass spreaders and they have a pretty rough finish. They were just really dirty so I used a...
