    Wouxun KG-UVD1P

I own that Wouxun and like it quite a lot. For the money it's great. Has some usability quirks as far as the manual programming method, but aside from that, it's a great value. Programming software is free, you just need the $10 cable for it. The other thing to note, it uses a female SMA...

    What am I missing?

Either that or just use DM780 since you already have HRD up. They are integrated and should work. With only HRD, using it for rig control, does the TX work? If TX doesnt' work, can you tune the radio in HRD and control other features? You could try VOX mode on the rig too, if in fact...

    New Kenwood TS-590S HF rig

Rumor mill so far says 3kHz and 500kHz roofing filters included, all the rest is IF DSP inbetween. USB and serial connections for computer control. I'm curious what the audio TX width and options will be like in the different modes. Price point rumor is $1800

    Quansheng tg-k4at

I have a Wouxun KG-UVD1P here and for $105 it is a great value. It's a dual band, they have 2m/440 and 2m/220 as options. it is not a true dual VFO like the VX7R though, more of a dual watch A/B where you can monitor two fixed frequencies, or scan on one and monitor a single on the other. Has...

I got something new to use and review

A BIG tip for you with a 7000. All the rear connectors are not strain reliefed and direct mounted on the circuit boards. In no way mount that with the connectors pressing against anything or they will crack internally. Leave slack on cables and keep the connectors free of leaning on...

    New Ham,, lots of questions

:thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1: Most versatile first HF antenna....that I still use as my main antenna. A good manual tuner..dont' be cheap Palstar is my brand of choice, it's worth the spend, to spend once. Some window line (balanced line) a current 1:1 balun, and coax from the tuner...

    New Ham,, lots of questions

I'd get a mobile first, put quick disconnects on it and move it from the house to the car until you figure out how you'll use it most. Of course from home, a roof antenna is a good idea too to make good use of it. I have a few HTs, they are fun when you are within solid range of repeater...

propper silicone to use on antennas

My friend who was an EE in the RF field told me about the issue. They used to use silicone to fix tuning coils etc on proto boards and found out the hard way about the corrosion. The topic came up because I had a few vehicle mounts with grommets I sealed with silicone, where the brass and...

    Digital voice for HAM radio

Not that I'm aware of, but bunches of repeaters are popping up with P25 in the NY metro area at least and commercial HTs are readily available that work on P25. You can get used commercial gear often for <$200 for an HT that does P25...it's also a TON better gear even at a new price at say $600...

    Digital voice for HAM radio

In the current state, the things I dislike are. The software digital voice options for HF permit really insane operational violations. Some of the versions allow for 20k wide signals and people have and do fire those up on the air. The way people are, if you make software available that can...

propper silicone to use on antennas

I believe it is acetic acid that is in most of the 'normal' silicone caulks out there. Shouldn't be used for sealing grommets close to RF connectors or inside housings with components in them either.

    FT-60 met the ground

Don't get a VX3 unless you are _sure_ it has enough TX power to be useful for you. They make much better scanners than HTs.

    my new radio has problems

The low end rigs unfortunately wind up victims to the golden screwdriver. You may have soft finals as a result of someone hammering it on AM. Have it bench aligned per the factory service manual by a skilled tech with the proper equipment to do the job. Then see what you come up with...

    my new radio has problems

You are likely not using a true peak reading watt meter. Most meters are avg reading and on SSB it is totally normal to see 20-40W output on a "100W" radio.

A good ballmount for my 108" whip

To buy a new Hustler SS ball mount, yer halfway to what the Breedlove is and half the quality too ;-). The Hustler has a crush sleeve in the middle of the assembly that was a hair too long for the two halves to seat properly. The really simple fix, just take a Dremel or a belt sander to the...

    Overdrive RK-56 knockoff with FT-857D

I keep the remote mic in the car for running the codes for the link system here when I have to. Pretty easy to just pop it off and on with the RJ connectors. A mic with a pre-amp works nicely for making up for the impedance mismatches too. The Road Devil or the M6B works on the 2k input rigs...

    Overdrive RK-56 knockoff with FT-857D

What I'm curious about is if they can drive the 2kOhm input on a Yaesu FT-7800/7900/8800, I don't want to bother rewiring one of mine at this point. So far that answer has been no with the 636L and some others I've played with, without using a pre-amp.
