Wow, it can't be this simple, I feel like an idiot.
After using it like above for several hours, I'm impressed.
The signal reading on hash level shows about the same on any band/frequency or mode. One mode isn't higher than the other, no channel is higher than the other. The receive on all...
Here is what I did just a couple hours ago while it's quiet on every band:
I realigned the radio by just the signal generator. Went through entire process.
Unhooked generator and moved all jumpers far away from the radios SO239 input (eliminate possibility of any stray signals from nearby...
SuperLid,
I can't locate any 1730's, and the MPSH10 is obsolete according to digikey but they do recommend the
KSP10TA
as a direct drop in replacement for the MPSH10.
Will that ksp10ta work as they state?
I may be chasing ghosts, lol...
My mobile, after I aligned it, exhibited the high hash level also. When I hooked it up in the truck to my whip and get away from my house the level drops to what I feel is a normal level. Maybe that's why I haven't had anyone complain of low or too high receive...
I did try the NTE583 diodes last night, not really any improvement on the hash noise level. If there was any improvement it was minut, but I did notice a slight improvement on weaker signals coming through (not by much though).
I'm gonna try replacing TR17 this afternoon with one with a higher...
Cable,
If I unhook coax, I still get some hash noise (not as loud though) but the level drops to zero on the signal meter. I have read also that a leaky or weak transistor in the first stage could cause a lot of noise, this one must be very leaky then, lol...
The meter on AM stays around 5 to 7...
LC,
My board is the EPT360014B.
Mike,
I may try the 85, thank you.
Not really an issue, just the hash noise level is way too high after alignment, have to either turn the needle way down (which doesn't correspond to incoming signals afterwards) or detune the receive by 6 s-units. L6 drops it a...
I've been looking into these Schottkey diodes/transistors for receive/NB improvement. I've learned there's many different types of specific diodes and transistors you can use.
I've heard differing opinions on the "improvement" diodes/transistors and wanted a little more info on the different...
Got it...
Output now:
AM carrier - 1w up to 12w
AM swing - 55w PEP
SSB - 45w to 50w
Reworked entire driver/final section, replaced all three bias adjustment VR's, triple checked solder work.
Factory bias network still intact, except I used 4148 diodes for bias diodes.
Radio reports on the...
Thought of that myself and yanked all the disc caps out of the RF section to check. All check good and very close to their respective values.
Gonna put all these back in, then look over very closely with bench mag glass to check for any cracked traces or bodged joints. I guess I will try it out...
I'm gonna try the bias circuit changes on one of my personal Saturns after I'm done with this one. The guy wants it stock, therefore I can't tinker with the bias circuit on this one.
I finally did run across a good Mitsubishi 2166 though, after going through a dozen or more I finally got one...
Oh, I learn something every day, lol...
I think all my 2166's are flat anyway. Highest HFe I can find is a 21 which is well below the minimum point for a 2166. I've got plenty of 2078' 2029, 2092, etc... but no more 2166. Gotta figure something out.
Would a very low hfe cause a high current...
Hmmm, just tested 4 other 2166's that I had in the parts box (used), and all of these show that diode symbol across the collector to emitter. But my 2078, 2092, 1969, 2312 transistors don't show that diode symbol between C and E.
Maybe all my parts 2166 that I yanked out of old radios is shot...
Got another Galaxy Saturn on the desk today.
Issue:
Keeps blowing finals.
Evaluation:
Passthrough regulator is fine.
AF regulator is fine.
Pre-driver is fine.
Driver is fine.
Replaced both finals with good ones.
No swing mods.
Output caps test as good.
All traces have firm joints.
Bias diodes...
Yep, you were 100% correct Brandon. I yanked out FL2 and replaced with another one.
BAM, AM receive immediately jumped up to exactly what my Saturn shows on AM, actually a little too high, lol... Realigned receiver section and now AM receive matches my Saturn.
I did tap/scratch on this other...
Just compared AM signals with my Saturn (had it hooked up and turned on for past hour) on top of this Saturn by quickly switching the coax.
All signals on this Saturn are around 3db lower than on mine. Mine rests around 3.5 s-units on hash noise (with my AC whine in it) while this one rests on...
